5.4 magnitude earthquake jolts north-eas | AGARTALA / SHILLONG, April 5 (TIWN): A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, rocked the north-eastern states on Tuesday, an official said. The tremor was felt at 1.12 p.m. with its epicentre located in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district, said an official of the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong. "We felt the earthquake in the district, but we have no immediate reports of any casualty or damage," East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril Diengdoh told IANS. "I have alerted all the BDOs (Block Development Officers) to send me an immediate report," he said. Seven of the north-eastern states -- Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur -- are considered by seismologists as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. It's worthy to mention here that the Union home ministry’s disaster management experts have warned of a bigger catastrophe, earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.2 or greater on the Richter scale which may hit the already ruptured Himalayan region. They say quakes with higher intensity than the one that struck Manipur on Monday are likely to rock the region in future. The tectonic shift a series of these recent earthquakes have caused in the region — Manipur 6.7 (Jan 2016), Nepal 7.3 (May 2015) and Sikkim 6.9 (2011) — have re-ruptured the plates that had already developed cracks during previous temblors. This has led to conditions which might trigger multiple earthquakes which may go up to 8.0 in magnitude. | 05-Apr-2016 |

North East Poll fever : Modi's popularit | AGARTALA / NEW DELHI, April 3 (TIWN): Never since its historical elections in the 1970s -- the peak of the Assam students' movement -- has the northeastern state generated so much interest in its polls nationally.Among the five states going in for assembly elections in April and May, the battle for Assam is turning out to be the mother of all elections for 2016, in more ways than one. It's a battle of prestige for both the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party. With the so-called 'Narendra Modi phenomenon' having failed the party in bringing any electoral success in 2015 in Bihar and in Delhi, Assam would be keenly watched to see whether the prime minister's image would sway the electorate. For the Congress, which has just lost power in two states -- Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand -- to political manipulations, a win would be an immense booster. In a peculiar turn of events, both the Congress and the BJP face similar challenges. In no other state where elections are being held in this round are the two major national parties vying for power in a direct contest. | 03-Apr-2016 |
