'Train services to start any time on Ass | AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN / IANS) Regular train services would start any time on the newly-laid broad gauge track from Lumding to Silchar in Assam that would provide better connectivity in the mountainous north-eastern region, Tripura Transport Minister Manik Dey said on Friday.Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu accompanied by senior officials held a meeting with Dey, who also holds the power portfolio, on Wednesday in New Delhi and discussed various railway projects in the north-eastern region."The regular train services on the Lumding-Silchar broad gauge line would start any time. Some technical aspects are being checked up and after that the vital railway line would become operational," Dey told reporters here.To bring the section in sync with those in the rest of the country, the railways in phase one earlier this year successfully converted the 115- to 120-year-old metre gauge line to broad gauge line that cost around Rs.5,500 crore.The 210-kilometre-long Lumding-Silchar railway line consists of 21 tunnels (the longest one being 3.23 km long), 79 major bridges and 340 minor bridges, 28 stations and four halt stations.In the second phase, the Northeast Frontier Railway from Sunday started work to convert the Badarpur-Kumarghat-Agartala section (excluding Badarpur railway station in southern Assam) from metre gauge to broad gauge. | 25-Sep-2015 |
Meghalaya seeks exemption from Central m | SHILLONG / AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN): The Meghalaya assembly has passed a resolution urging the central government to issue a presidential notification, repealing central laws related to mining in the state.The move on Thursday comes after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned rat-hole coal mining in the state.Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who moved the resolution on the last day of the autumn session, said his government had submitted a proposal to the central government to accordingly issue a presidential notification.The NGT ordered an interim ban on "rat-hole" coal mining in Meghalaya in April 2014 after the All Dimasa Students Union and the Dima Hasao District Committee filed an application before the tribunal alleging that the water in Kopili river was turning acidic due to coal mining in Jaintia Hills.On March 23 last year, the assembly unanimously adopted a resolution urging the central government to favourably consider the request of the state government, and to issue a presidential notification.Sangma also said that Meghalaya considered submitting a "specific proposal" to the central government to issue a presidential notification so that relevant sections and sub-sections of three central laws would not apply to the Autonomous Region (Scheduled Areas) of the state. | 25-Sep-2015 |
High Court censures service of SP Sepahi | AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN): Tripura High Court took serious note of negligence of duty by state police. In a judgment on Thursday, Sepahijala district police super Pradip De service was censured for his refusal to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) in a complaint of murder. Sepahijela SP who had received presidential award earlier, now in neck deep trouble for not lodging FIR against a murder case. A Tripura High Court’s Divisional bench chaired by Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice U B Saha censured Sepahijela SP for not lodging any FIR against a murder case of Sonamura Subdivision. The O/C of Sonamura P S, Narayan Chandra Saha has also been warned to take care of such matters in future. Tripura High Court also warned the whole police dept. that in future such allegations should not come, as this the 5th time that police has found guilty for not lodging FIR. According to the reports, victim Anal Halk went to Sonamura P S to lodge an FIR, against his sister-in-law for his brother Kamal Halk’s murder. Kamal Halk used to work at Kuwait. After coming in Tripura he had been married to Ruma Aktar and after few days of their marriage Kamal died. Anal Halk alleged that it was his wife who alongwith few others killed Kamal Halk on May 8, 2015 during midnight. In the following day he went to Sonamura P S to lodge an FIR against Ruma Das, but O/C of Sonamura namely Narayan Chandra Saha P S didn’t lodge the FIR.Sources that Anal Halk also went to Sephahijela SP Pradip Kr. SC notice on excluding India-Bangladesh | NEW DELHI / AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN): The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the central and West Bengal governments on a petition that said residents of enclaves exchanged between India and Bangladesh were wrongly excluded during a survey in 2011. The bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice V. Gopala Gowda issued notice to the external affairs ministry and the home ministry after counsel Colin Gonsalves, appearing for NGO Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha, said the affected people were eligible residents of enclaves on both sides of the border but were wrongly excluded from the 2011 survey, thereby leaving them in a stateless position. After Supreme Court’s stay order on Bengal enclaves,Tripura’s disputed Muhuri Char likely to get national attention as Indian Govt given away large chunk of land to Bangladesh after Modi-Hasina LBA agreement. Muhuri Char’s situation is similar to many disputed Bengal enclaves where people were never consulted and have no idea at all as to when the so called survey was conducted. Boost for Tripura's Tea Industry : Waive | KOLKATA / AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN) Aiming to boost tea production in the country, the government is mullingdoing away with the requisite permit from the Tea Board of India to start a plantation and has asked states to consider waiving off the no-objection certificate which is required, an official said on Thursday."We (commerce ministry) have said it should be relaxed. There should be no requirement of permit from the Tea Board (of India) to plant tea. It is the stand of the commerce ministry that as long as anybody has legal land, permission to plant tea from Tea Board is not needed," additional secretary in the commerce ministry, R. R. Rashmi told media persons in Kolkata on the sidelines of the AGM of Tea Research Association.He said about two months back, response from the tea-producing states was sought to do away with the no-objection certificate (NOC) which is mandatory for the planters to start a tea garden."The Tea Act, 1953 will address the permit issue but the land issue is to be addressed by the state governments. Sabroom Judge attack 3rd hearing : CJM c | AGARTALA / SABROOM, Sep 25 (TIWN): Sabroom CJM court chaired by Judge Ashit Debnath sent 3 accused to 6 day’s Judicial Custody in its 3rd hearing on Thursday evening. The first hearing was on Sep 2, whereas the second hearing was on Sep 11 and the Court denied bail to the accused CPI-M goons and sent them in JC. These four accused CPI-M goons are Abhijit Dey, Abhik Basak, Bijay Dey, Biswajit Dey. However, these CPI-M cadres earlier appealed for bail, but CJM court of Sabroom rejected their bail appeal repeatedly due to ghastly nature of attack on judiciary. But surprisingly, after the hearing on September 11, one of the cadre Abhijit Basak managed his bail on September 19 on the medical grounds. NLFT's foiled masterplan to bomb Agartal | AGARTALA, Sep 24 (TIWN): Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be asked to investigate the NLFTs ploy to carry out subversive activities in the capital during Durga Puja. The state government will constitute a team comprising of senior police officers. The police while interrogating three NLFT associates came to know about the plan of carrying out subversive activities. The police from the seized mobile sets came to know that the nabbed person was in touch with some administrative officials, college faculty members, engineers ,school teachers and government employees. Meanwhile,on expiry of their three-day Police Custody term, the West Agartala Police produced the militants before the court seeking ten day Police Custody to unearth the details of their plan. Like miracles, even small coaching centres like 'School of Science' of Shyamali Bazar bagging maximum number of TPSC seats TCS, TPS, TFS by collecting hefty amounts from students. The High Court of Tripura in an order have stayed the recruitment of assistant professors selected by Tripura Public Service Commisison ( TPSC). The list of names was released on September 15, 2015. On Wednesday, Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice SC Das division bench gave the order. After court order the recruitment process was withheld.It is mentionable here that several allegations of irregularities have cropped against TPSC on the issue recruitment and reservation of assistant professor. These have caused serious discontent among a section of reserved category.Its alleged that TPSC acted as a puppet of ruling CPI(M) in recruitment advertisement of PG teachers and assistant professors violating the reservation policy. Protesting it, Bijoya Bhattacherjee filed a writ petition in High Court. After hearing, the court directed the state government to submit an affidavit on November 17 next. Due to Jamatia’s manipulating role over legal decisions of HC, all the promotions are muffled in Tripura. Allegations are coming that former Law secretary DM Jamatia had violated not only the rules, but he also violated the statement of Tripura High Court when he was giving his statement to Tripura govt. Although challenging the High Court, Govt. of Tripura had appealed in the Supreme Court, but govt. failed to fill the vacant posts since the promotions of govt. employees were also stopped. D M Jamatia’s statement against the High Court decision created much confusion among the public regarding reservation policy declared by HC. However, govt.’s efforts to save its corrupt officers led D M Jamatia to write the statement as per his wish. According to the hearing of Tripura HC, it was written in (Page 50, Pargaraph 71) that “if a person is recruited on the basis of general merit list then also s/he will be able to enjoy then reservation in future if s/he doesn’t surrender the certificateâ€. SC stays Birajit Sinha’s 3 months | AGARTALA, Sep 23 (TIWN): India’s one of the best criminal lawyer, former foreign Minister Salman Khurshid successfully arranged stay order against Tripura High Court’s decision on State Congress President Birajit Sinha, . While talking to TIWN, Sinha said, “At 2 pm my case was produced before the Supreme Court and India’s one of the best criminal defence lawyer Salman Khurshid produced the case on my behalfâ€.Sinha further said, “I am very happy to get the bail order, now I don’t have to surrenderâ€. However earlier Sinha was unwilling to declare the name of the lawyer, but it is only on Wednesday that Sinha disclosed the name to TIWN correspondent over phone. It’s to be mentioned that Salman Khurshid is an Indian politician and was the Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of External Affairs. He belongs to the Indian National Congress. Earlier Sinha pointed out while talking to TIWN that “Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi is with me, so I am not afraidâ€, however, after hearing Sinha seemed very happy with SC’s stay order over High Court’s judgement. Birajit Sinha was accused of violating arms act which caused double murders in the year 2004 during a Panchayat poll in Baburbazar, Kailashahar. NLFT's escalation of insurgent activitie | AGARTALA, Sept 23 (TIWN): Although Tripura Chief Minsiter Manik Sarkar claimed many times about NLFT’s presence at neighbouring country Bangladesh, also alleged foreign govt. for sheltering terrorists, but till date CM has not much clue about NLFT’s ever rising insurgent activities in Tripura.One after another incidents of NLFT cadres infiltration into Tripura creating tensions among the people of State. Tripura is suffering from such terrorist activities, many parts of the border remained unfenced and thus those areas have become open fields for insurgents to enter Tripura.At Bhangmun border area, under Kanchanpur Sub-division, NLFT insurgents rapidly enter by taking the advantage of unfenced border. At Bhangmun Indo-Bangla border area, at least 5 km areas are left unfenced although pillars have been set in that area, but no fencing has been done yet. Although as per the central govt.’s rule, border areas would be provided with lights, but on that area it remains dark during the nights.
