Uncertainty dogs 35,000 tribal refugees | AGARTALA / AIZAWL, Feb 27 (TIWN / IANS) Despite fresh initiatives by the central and Tripura governments, the repatriation to Mizoram of about 35,000 tribal refugees sheltered in Tripura for over 17 years still hangs in balance. Refugee leaders told Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his deputy Kiren Rijiju recently that they were willing to return to their homes in Mizoram if their 10 demands, including security and rehabilitation, were met.The Mizoram government remains ambiguous on the refugees' demands, including free supply of food grain for two years and allotment of land to them. The demands have also run into objections from Mizos.Tripura and Mizoram share a 109-km border.After meeting the refugee leaders at Kanchanpur in northern Tripura, the central ministers and officials met Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in Agartala.The immigrants live in small thatched homes made of bamboo and hemp in seven transitory relief camps in Kanchanpur in northern Tripura, adjoining Mizoram. 'India-Bangladesh rail project to suffer | AGARTALA, Feb 27 (TIWN / IANS) Criticising the railway budget, Tripura Transport Minister Manik Dey said Friday that the India-Bangladesh railway project will suffer due to lack of funds."Due to lack of funds, the land acquisition for the India-Bangladesh railway project connecting Tripura would be delayed. The new railway project will also suffer," Dey told reporters here.He said: "In the railway budget (for 2015-16), there was no fund allocated for land acquisition. We want the early completion of the vital railway project."The minister said the total cost of the proposed project was earlier estimated at Rs.271 crore. In addition, Rs.302 crore was needed to acquire around 100 acres of land in India for laying tracks."The preliminary work has started to lay a 15-km railway track to link Agartala with Bangladesh's (southeastern city) Akhaura.
