River Howrah-lifeline of Tripura worseni | AGARTALA, May 15 (TIWN): Despite of taking several initiatives to control the rising pollution, the life line of the capital is yet in a pitiable condition with garbage in various parts of the river banks. Even though the State Government has taken initiatives to provide sanitation facility to the families resided on the river bank to keep the river clean yet the pollution of the river is worsening day by day. Besides, initiatives have also been taken to do bamboo cultivation to control the erosion of river banks. It is worthy to mention that the Forest Department it taking initiatives to control the erosion of bank of the Howrah River but the problem of the river does not end here, the river is also facing threat of major water pollution and so far the river water is worsening day by day. As per the report of Tripura State Pollution Control Board, Howrah River becomes grossly polluted in Agartala city due to the garbage’s being dumped into the river. The Howrah River’s Pollution is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost threatening a danger to the lives of the people. | 15-May-2016 |

Reportedly, ‘expired-medicine selling racket’ was exposed when a patient of Lalchara, under Dharmanagar Sub-Division became seriously ill after he consumed the prescribed medicine by Dr Nath. Since years, majority of patients and local people were fuming against Dr Mrinal Kanti Nath as during his visit in Primary Govt. health centres across Dharmanagar were charging fees from the villagers. The so-called decision after which the AMC authority closed all drains by concrete cover, the cleaning of soil and garbage was stopped resulting chocked drains as it cannot carry water and the water floods randomly on the streets.The residents allege that the drains are being filled up with mud and debris, which has been leading to constant flooding in the area and affecting traffic movement as well.Commuters got stranded in many parts of the city as major roads were flooded due to poor condition of drainage lines.Some of the internal roads were inundated for hours. There were also reports of rain water causing damage to shops and housing blocks. Indian Railways is set to commission 2,800 kms broad gauge track at the rate of 7.7 km per day, a senior railways official said.V.K. Gupta, member engineering (ME) of Railway Board said that railways has commissioned around 4,800 km of broad gauge track in the last two years which includes about 1,200 km of new line, 1,900 km of gauge conversion and 1,700 km of doubling. "In the North-East region, Indian Railways commissioned about 900 km of broad gauge in the last two years, leaving only about 50 km of metre gauge lines to be converted in 2016-17. Similarly, Dudhnoi-Mendipathar (20 km) new line has brought Meghalaya on Indian Railway broad gauge network.In addition, a 132 km part of third alternative connectivity route to the North-East (New Maynaguri - Jogighopa) was also commissioned," Gupta said here. "Passenger services have been introduced between Silchar and Agartala, thereby bringing, the capital of Tripura on broad gauge.
