AGARTALA, May 14 (TIWN): To raise awareness about road safety, Tripura police along with traffic department as part of its public awareness initiatives flagged off a cycle rally from Vivekananda stadium on Saturday morning.

The awareness rally was flagged off the police DGP K Nagraj, Traffic SP Smriti ranjan Das. IG Law and order Anurag Dhyankar and others.

It ended at the Vivekananda stadium after crossing across all the major roads of the city. The programme was organised by Tripura police along with Traffic department. On route awareness about drunken driving was also spread.

Speaking on this occasion, police DGP K Nagraj said that the cycle rally was organised to create awareness in the public regarding the inevitability of road safety measures. “We have launched a drive to sensitise public regarding traffic rules and road safety norms. We are getting positive results,” he said.

The official further said that the youth should take the lead in heralding a new wave of awareness on road safety measures.

Road traffic safety refers to the methods and measures used to prevent road users from being killed or seriously injured. Typical road users include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, vehicle passengers, and passengers of on-road public transport.

Best-practices in modern road safety strategies focus on preventing serious injury and death from vehicle crashes despite human fallibility whereas, previous road safety paradigms assumed compliance with traffic regulations.

Cycling is environmentally friendly as the mode of transport is silent and produces no emissions. By contrast, motorised transport is noisy, while its emissions reduce air quality and add to the “greenhouse” gases contributing to global warming.

Cycling can also reduce congestion and the journey times of other road users, particularly in urban areas. Businesses may be unwilling to be based in an area constantly beset by traffic congestion which can cause delivery and health problems and result in a negative effect on the local economy.
