"We are boycotting the event. Modi's 'Act-East' Policy : India, Thaila | AGARTALA / NEW DELHI, May 24 (TIWN): Modi’s act-east policy paying dividends to Tripura and much neglected NE region with new infrastructures, connectivity to South Asian countries, integrating highways and business opportunities. India, Thailand and Myanmar are working on a 1,400-kilometre long highway that will link India with Southeast Asia by land for the first time in decades, giving a boost to trade and cultural exchanges between the three countries. Indian Ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi said 73 bridges in Myanmar, built more than seven decades ago during World War II, were being renovated with funding from India to allow vehicles to cross the highway safely. The road will help in transportation of goods and further development of SMEs in North East India, he said, adding the tri-nation highway exemplifies India's "Act East" policy.When the repair work will be completed in 18 months, the highway could be opened to traffic from all three countries, he said. Mizoram's fresh initiative to take back | Aizawl/Agartala, May 23 (TIWN/IANS) The Mizoram government has taken a fresh initiative to take back the tribal refugees sheltered in seven north Tripura camps for the last 19 years, officials said here on Monday. "Mizoram government submitted to the union home ministry last week a detailed plan for repatriation of tribal refugees from Tripura to Mizoram," Lalbiakzama, who is additional secretary in Mizoram's home department, said in Aizawl. "After the union home ministry approves the roadmap, a fresh initiative would be undertaken tobring back the Reang tribal refugees to their villages in western Mizoram," he said. The state government has sought Rs.68 crore from the central government to rehabilitate the tribals, Lalbiakzama said. About 31,300 Reang tribals, who call themselves "Bru", have been living in seven makeshift camps in northern Tripura's Kanchanpur areas adjoining Mizoram since October 1997. They had fled ethnic violence in Mizoram following the killing of a Mizo forest officer at the Dampa Tiger Reserve. | 23-May-2016 |

Deadly Cyclone Roanu cause major floodin | AGARTALA / DHAKA, May 22 (TIWN): Tropical Cyclone Roanu lashed Bangladesh, Northeast India with heavy winds and sheets of rain. After causing devastating flooding and mudslides in Sri Lanka earlier in the week, Cyclone Roanu turned deadly again this weekend as it slammed into Bangladesh. At least 32 people are dead with many more injured in coastal Bangladesh, according to local authorities. The deaths occurred amid house collapses, landslides and a storm surge that broke embankments at two spots in Chittagong. Officials told that some places were inundated by a storm surge that was 0.9 to 1.2 meters (3 to 4 feet) above normal tide height. While interaction with land is causing Roanu to weaken, in terms of damaging winds, the threat for flooding will persist across northeastern India and northern and coastal Myanmar on Sunday.
