Agartala sets to become 3rd Internationa | AGARTALA, July 4 (TIWN): Agartala is going to be the third international internet gateway for India after Mumbai and Chennai, said Chief General Manager NE-I Circle D P Singh here on Saturday while interacting with media on the occasion of celebration of Digital India Week. Singh said, optical fiber cable from Agartala will get connected with 10 gigabit bandwidth of Bangladesh at Akhaura and through Dhaka it will be connected at submarine telecom cable in Cox's Bazar of South Bangladesh. This connectivity will facilitate northeastern states to be connected with reliable global tele-network, which will provide high speed and uninterrupted telecommunication expected by next six months. Singh said, “The Agartala Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP) would be the center point to connect the India and Bangladesh telecom bandwidth.†However, after several persuasions and complexity the Telecom Ministry tied a nod to the historical service by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) recently. Initially BSNL will lease 10 Gbps bandwidth from Bangladesh’s lone submarine cable operator, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL). A fiber cable line from Cox's Bazar landing station through Akhaura under Brahmanbaria district to Agartala, capital of Tripura will carry this bandwidth.He however, indicated that Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad would launch the Indo-Bangladesh bandwidth connectivity program Agartala next week. “BSNL is actively engaged to the work which is expected to be completed by next six months," Singh added. | 04-Jul-2015 |

Talking to the reporters here at the civil secretariat on Friday, Secretary for State power S K Rakesh had said that there is a surplus power here in the state of Tripura. OTPC at Palatana will start another unit within this year which will be generating 90 MW power. Rakesh said, “The transmission lines will be set up from Suryamaninagar to South Comilla via Kaiya Dhepa of the state within December of 2015.†There is scope that the transmission lines might start working by the first quarter of 2016, he told reporters on Friday..S.K.Rakesh informing the media about the outcome of the high level meeting held at Delhi said that the meeting was held on June 2 at the Ministry of Power office, where it has been finalized that the state government would provide a power of 100 MW to Bangladesh from its own source. During the meeting, a five members’ committee was constituted from Indian side and a three members’ committee from Bangladesh side were formed. Indo-Bangla rail line from Tripura: Cent | AGARTALA, July 4 (TIWN): Ministry of Railways, Govt of India has decided to reduce the project cost of the India-Bangladesh rail line from Tripura connecting Bangladesh. The 15-km-long Agartala-Akhaura railway route would connect Indian Railways with the Bangladesh Railways through the North-East which would improve connectivity and boost trade between the two countries. With the setting of elevated corridor of 3.7 km, Advisor of Transport, Government of India Dr Manoj Singh has asked the state government regarding the preparation and progress of Agartala-Akhaura Rail Project.The government of India has reduced the total amount of fund from Rs 302 crore to Rs 97 crore. According to the official of the state transport department here the elevated corridor would require 67 acres of land where a total of 19 families would be affected.The state transport department are on the way towards the preliminary works under the new land acquisition act. If the state government receives 60% of the sanctioned fund, then it will begin the construction work of railway from Agartala-Akhaura, said the official.The process of laying 15 km long railway tracks to connect Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh is expected to be completed by 2017.Railway tracks would be set up from Badharghat Railway station to the national highway and it covers a total of distance of 500 metre where surface tracks will be laid. This length of railway track would be laid on a width of 10 metre.After that, the elevated corridor will begin and end at Charipara yard. NSUI seeks resignation of CPI-M MLA Kesh | AGARTALA, July 3 (TIWN): Rubbishing the statement of Bijan Dhar, the Tripura Congress’s wing National Student Union of India (NSUI) on Friday morning has hit the residence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar demanding resignation of CPI-M MLA Keshab Debbarma over his fake educational degree row. The NSUI supporters scuffling with the concerned police personnel infront of CM’s residence denied to accept the silent role of Manik Sarkar over the fake degree row case, as the communist Party of India at Delhi are on a spree demanding the resignation of Delhi HRD Minister Smriti Irani over the same issue. Protesters raised slogans against Keshab; and criticised CM Manik Sarkar for not sacking the minister. “We will continue our protest until he does not resign from the cabinet. Dhaka to open more diplomatic missions i | AGARTALA, July 3 (TIWN/IANS): Bangladesh will expand its diplomatic presence in India's northeast to improve trade, people-to-people contacts and cultural ties with the eight states in the region, of which four share a common border with it. Dhaka now has a diplomatic mission in Tripura capital Agartala. "New Delhi has accepted Dhaka's proposal to open a new Bangladesh deputy high commission in Guwahati in Assam," a Bangladesh foreign ministry official told IANS.The official, who requested not to be named, said the Agartala mission would also be upgraded as an assistant high commission. "The proposed deputy high commission in Guwahati will have consular jurisdiction over Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh," the official said. The new deputy high commission in Guwahati was likely to open next year. According to the official, the process for upgrading the mission in Agartala would be completed by September. Bangladesh already has diplomatic missions in New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. In return, Dhaka has allowed New Delhi to open assistant high commissions in Khulna and Sylhet, the official added. Tripura Power Minister left for Delhi to | AGARTALA, July 3 (TIWN): Aiming to clinch the 100 MW power deal with the neighbouring country Bangladesh against the 144 surplus, Tripura Power Minister Manik Dey on Thursday had left for New Delhi, the official of the power department confirmed. At the meantime, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) is on a verge to complete the work of setting up the power transmission line up to Bangladesh which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The state government here had decided the 100 MW power to be fed from Suryamaninagar grid of Agartala to Brahmanbaria grid from the state governments share of 726 MW capacity gas based mega power project at Palatana in Gomati Tripura.However, the high level meeting at Delhi is expected to clear up the deal with Bangladesh, in regard of supplying 100 MW power from Palatana OTPC. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has targeted to finish the transmission line to supply 100 MW power to neighbouring Bangladesh via Brahmanbaria grid from Tripura by end of this year.Earlier the power minister Manik Dey said that the state government has planned to supply power to Bangladesh as the Bangladesh government had extended its helping hands towards bringing the heavy machineries here in Tripura Palatana through their land.PGCIL has already completed work on 20 of the 65 transmission towers in south and western part of Tripura whereas the work on more 45 towers is underway. | 02-Jul-2015 |
Tripura HC issues show cause to the Stat | AGARTALA, July 3 (TIWN): On yet another major blow to the State Medical Board, Tripura High Court on Thursday issued a show cause notice to the State Government, seeking reply on ruling “No Admission†to MBBS students here at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).One Pronoy Kumar Poddar was restricted from his admission to MBBS degree course by the State Medical Board on June 30 on the ground of colour blindness.Talking to TIWN in this regard Advocate Arijit Bhowmik said, “The High Court Chief under the division bench of Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice U. B. Saha on Thursday hearing the complaint filed by the deprived medical students, issued a show cause notice to the state government.â€Adding to that advocate said that the HC had sought reply from the state government by July 9. Briefing the case the advocate said that this year on the month of June 26, Pronoy Kumar Poddar was asked to get a medical report on the ground of the colour blindness in order to get an admission to the MBBS degree course at AGMC.But Podder failed and later after he went to AGMC seeking admission to the degree course, the concerned board members restricted him saying that the board cannot give admission to him on the ground of colour blindness, said Bhowmik.He also said that even after seeking his medical report the board refused to give it saying the report cannot be provided as he will not get admission to the MBBS course at AGMC. | 02-Jul-2015 |

Kailasahar howls for rail connectivity w | AGARTALA, July 2 (TIWN): Lack of governmental intervention has ruined the upgradation work of the Kailasahar Airport under Unakoti District of Tripura which shut down in mid 1990 due to lack of space. The airport is almost turned into an abandoned place. A team of Airport Authority of India (AAI) had visited Kailasahar way back in 2011 with an effort to reÂopen the Kailasahar airport. But the airport is lying non-functional since several years. However on Thursday the Kailasahar Unnayan Mancha had met the Governor Tathagata Roy at Governor House seeking his intervention for the up gradation of the airport soon for a direct connectivity with Kolkata, Guwahati, South Assam and many other parts of the North Eastern region. Demanding for the upgradtion work of the aerodrome, the Unnayan Manch claimed, “Since the year 1990 the Kailasahar airport remained shut and has got no facility yet today for the local people.†It said, “Kailasahar aerodrome, located at Durgapur area under Kailasahar subÂdivision which was established in the 60th century with a small aircraft service, now remains closed for past many years due to the lack of maintenance, staffing, and other necessary things.†The District Magistarte and Collector (DM) Mrinal Kanti Nath has recently sent a proposal to the State Transport Department in regard of the acquisition of 70 acres of land. | 02-Jul-2015 |
