AGARTALA, Sep 23 (TIWN): Residents of Bejimara’s Wards 3 and 4 blocked the Sonamura–Kathalia road on Tuesday morning, protesting what they alleged was the prolonged failure of an electricity transformer serving the area.

According to the residents, the transformer has remained non-functional for nearly a year, leaving the locality dependent on temporary repairs and makeshift arrangements to maintain electricity supply. They claimed that despite repeatedly informing the concerned authorities, no permanent solution had been provided.

The residents began their road blockade at around 10 a.m., demanding that the faulty transformer be repaired or replaced. The protest continued for nearly an hour, causing disruption to office-goers, pedestrians, school students and relatives accompanying patients.

The situation was brought under control after Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Vice-Chairman Shahjahan Mia spoke with the protesting residents. He reportedly assured them that the transformer would be repaired within one day.

Following the assurance, the residents withdrew the blockade and traffic movement on the Sonamura–Kathalia road resumed.

The residents have now said they will wait for the promised repair and expect a permanent solution to the electricity problem that they say has affected the locality for nearly a year.
