AGARTALA / KAILASHAHAR, Feb 7 (TIWN): Not Neermahar or Ujjayanta Palace, but Tripura’s most wonderful historical creation at Unakoti is likely to become the Centre of attraction for tourists.

Already with the BG connection huge the tourists numbers have been increased in Tripura and now within 2 years Kailashahar, BG connection will directly connect Unakoti Archeological site with rest of the country.

Unakoti never got the deserved publicity whereas Unakoti is as wonderful as Ajanta Illora.

On November 19, the superintendant of Archeological survey of India (Aizawl) Tejes Garga declared that very soon Unakoti to be declared as one of the World Heritage Site.

It was announced during a programme held on the occasion of ‘World Heritage Week’ inauguration at Kailashahar.

However, expressing worried about the decreasing popularity of this historical place Garga said that soon initiatives to be taken to develop NE tourist spots.

It is the prime tourist spot of Unakoti Tripura District in the Kailashahar Subdivision in the North-eastern Indian state of Tripura. It is Shaiva pilgrimage and dates back to 7th – 9th centuries if not earlier. The marvelous rock carvings, murals with their primitive beauty, waterfalls are not to be missed.

Tripura Governor Thathagata Roy on the occasion of Statehood Day on January 22 said, ‘Unakoti can become equal to Ajanata-Illora, but it has been left in deplorable condition. Before coming in Tripura I didn’t know about Unakoti’s beauty’.

‘From Kolkata people go to Uttarakhand, to Himachal but they don’t come in Tripura. The state govt should recognize its drawbacks to cater tourists and take tourism as a serious means which will generate further sources of income for common people’, said Roy.

It’s to mention here that Unakoti hill, literally meaning, one less a koti in Bengali, hosts an ancient Shaivite place of worship with huge rock reliefs celebrating Shiva.

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu also asked the Tripura Govt to utilize BG service for tourism opportunities.

The Central Govt has given green signal to begin land acquisition process for Dharmanagar to Kailashahar railway.

With this initiative of the Central Govt Kailashahar and other Subdivisions under Unakoti Dist will be benefited a lot & there will be lots of commercial development in coming days.
