AGARTALA, Dec 29 (TIWN): India-Bangladesh Maitri Fair has begun at Bangladesh Moulabi Bazar where Tripura Industry Minister Tapan Chakraborty along with Govt officials were also present. In April 2016, central Govt had approved fund for 2 border haats in Tripura. It was announced that Tripura will have six more border haats (markets) along its 856km long border with Bangladesh to boost trade and commerce between the two countries. Earlier, two border haats, one in Srinagar under Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura and the other in Kamala Sagar under Bishalgarh sub-division of Sipahijala district, have been functioning. Six more border haats had been planned, out of which 2 have gotten momentum now. Earlier, Tripura Industry Minister Tapan Chakroborty said, "Projects worth Rs 2.88 crore and 2.92 crore have been sanctioned by the Union ministry of commerce and work on the projects is likely to begin soon”.

It’s worthy to mention here that the Srinagar border haat, inaugurated by Union minister for commerce Nirmala Sitharaman on January 13 last year and Kamala Sagar border haat, opened on June 6 last year, have succeeded in increasing border trade between the two countries. Earlier, Tripura’s geographical location was considered as a curse to its development, but after the Modi Govt came in power, Tripura is emerging as the corridor for various trades. The geographical location, which considered as the backwardness of Tripura, now emerging as the ‘blessing’ to the state.

In the financial years 2012-13 and 2013-14, Tripura had exported goods worth Rs 41 lakhs each while the state's export doubled in 2014-15 to Rs 1.2 crore. During the same period, the state's imports from Bangladesh were worth Rs 342.65 crore, 229.83 crore and 357.65 crore respectively. Tripura had less to export and more to import and, hence, the imbalance was natural, said source.

On Dec 26, before going to Bangladesh, Minister said, “At present 50 traders are doing business at Srinagar and Kamalasagar border haats. Now the number will be doubled with 100 businessmen and atleast 100 dollars selling will be approved for the traders”, he added. In this regard 29 to 31st Dec a business summit will be held at Moulabazar, where Minister Tapan Chakraborty and other Govt officials  will remain present.

However, for Northeast Investment Policy’s re-implementation Minister thanked the Central Govt due to which a subsidy will be given to the businessmen. Bangladesh is the nearest trade partner of Tripura in export-import activities, before among all the South-East Asia’s country.
