NEW DELHI / AGARTALA Oct 12 (TIWN): The First World Tsunami Awareness Day will be observed on November 5 during the upcoming Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016, a government release said on Wednesday.
The conference slated to take place here between November 2-5, is being organised by the government of India in collaboration with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). It will include various activities to raise awareness through thematic events, exhibitions, and distribution of awareness materials.
State Tripura is also on the high risk of massive earthquake as it is situated on seismic zone-V and has probability of occurrence earthquakes measuring more than 8 magnitudes on Richter scale.
Though, it indicates massive collateral damage in the form of casualties and mass injuries but the state government is not taking any preventive measure to manage in case of any natural disaster. Guwahati, Shillong and Agartala are the three Northeast Indian cities at highest risk of being devastated by an earthquake, with 36 other cities in areas prone to earthquakes, according to government data.
In 2016 state witnessed atleast 5 earthquakes, but state’s disaster management although very much trained, but has been proven unhelpful in emergency times.
Most importantly, Agartala City has been constructed in a manner that there is no chance of limited life-loss if earthquake hits the state with greater magnitudes, just because Govt is yet to think about making earthquake proof-buildings. Building which are made by Govt. are fully unscientific & maximum constructions were done with cheap materials.
