AGARTALA, Oct 5 (TIWN): Tripura turned into a major narcotics smuggling hotbed as 500 kilos Ganja was recovered by BSF 159th Btn. from a Truck which was going from Agartala to Guwahati. BSF 159th Btn. nabbed the driver and his vehicle from Panisagar Selothi area. The truck bearing number BR01GA4585 (Bihar reign. number) was carrying huge amount of Ganja, which has been kept at Dharmanagar Police Station now. The vehicle has been seized whereas the driver was arrested and handed over to North Tripura Police. The name of the driver is Lalan Ray, S/O-Joyprasad Ray, resident of Bihar. The bundles of Ganja recovery ahead of Durga Puja has created much tension at North Tripura.
Just before a month Rs. 1 crores Ganja was recovered by Sepahijala Police. People thought drug-crime rates may decrease this time, but with this incident it shows what is the condition of state’s law and order. Although DGP K Nagraj claimed that Tripura will remain crime free during Durga Puja, but this is the reality of state grown level and so called high alerts. As Durga Puja is coming closer demands for narcotics are high across Tripura.
With the making of puja pandal, the manufacturing of Ganja, Charas and importing of various other drugs is much rampant in state and businessmen are busy to fill their go-downs with such goods.
A large number of those narcotic which are also supplied to the neighboring countries is based on Sonamura subdivision, under Sepahijala Dist.
Narcotic business is also rampant in North Tripura, although the narcotic circulation there mostly based on illegal intrusion of those items from NE states. However, police many times nabbed many smugglers but due to open entry allowed at Tripura-Mizoram border the narcotic business is spreading its wings fast.
Tripura’s drug trafficking duties, which are mostly given to the police are just not enough with the increasing rate of drug-business.
As Durga Puja is coming closer so this is the high time for businessmen to gather every kind of narcotic in their shops. Not a surprise, many shop-keepers with the interest of high profits, are selling openly drugs to the customers from their go-downs.
Durga Puja which has become almost like a lunatic party vacation for young generation, is using as the highest business period for a section of shop-keepers who not only sell only drugs, but they sell liquors (illegally) at double price especially after midnight.
