AGARTALA, Sep 6 (TIWN): With latest trends and report of Ganja smuggling in the state, it can be predicted that Tripura has solely turned into a den for provoking terrorism and smuggling beyond the borders due to the porous Indo-Bangla border. Recently, in a drive two persons were arrested in Rastarmatha, Tripura, for carrying Cannabis worth around Rs 44 lakh, in a joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the police. Dozens of packets of cannabis were seized from their possession on Saturday. According to reports, the two men were carrying the Cannabis in a truck to Guwahati. On specific inputs, a special operation was carried out by troops of 86 battalion of the Border Security Force(BSF) jointly with the police, which recovered huge quantity of Cannabis hidden in a truck in Rastharmatha area of bordering Sepahijala district of Tripura. Smuggling on cannabis is rising rampantly in the state with no action from the authority for curtailing the business of Ganja cultivation and smuggling.

Even when the State is massively hit with the Ganja plantation, the authority is reluctant to make any comment over the Ganja drive with just one sentence that ‘the drives are going on in the areas.

It is to be mentioned here Cannabis is grown on a large scale in interior and inaccessible areas of the region, particularly in Sonamura and Boxanagar and also in many parts of the State. Since most of these plantations are tucked away in hills and forests, government agencies have a tough time destroying these.

When it comes to narcotics, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances.  People cultivate the Ganja plants and do business for crores and also smuggle to Bangladesh to fetch hefty amount of money.

However, despite several government agencies are coordinating the drive and making people aware of the hazards of its cultivation but it remains a lucrative business smuggled mainly to Bangladesh.

According to a source, large parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar are emerging as drug consuming zones, and bordering areas of Tripura are contributing to the fast emerging drugs market. Smugglers based in Tripura are sending these contraband items to Bangladesh virtually by the truckload, hundreds of acres of remote land in West Tripura have become sprawling Ganja plantations, the source informed.

The sources also said that few local markets of Agartala are becoming huge hubs for Contraband items. On the issue of narcotics, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances.
