KAMALPUR, April 24 (TIWN): Along with the rest of the state, the Biswa Pustak Divas, the day for book reading, cherishing and creating new readers throughout the world, got observed with due regards at Kamalpur last evening. The program was observed at the Bimal Singha Memorial public library at Netaji corner.
The observation was a joint venture of the library authority and Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat. Sit and draw competition, reading out of poetry and short stories by the local composers, discussions etc were performed as a part of the observation. In the discussion, Prof. Srimanata Roy, MLA Anjan Das, Nagar Chairperson Subrata Bhattacharjee discussed on the present trend of book reading.
The speakers admitted that, the present generations of students and youths lost interest in reading books. Further, the role of school libraries also came under scanner.
No school had librarian. And as result, the books remained under lock and key in the almirahs for years and got destroyed. The demand of making a day of the week as reading day for schools also came up.
However, what result would those discussions bore, remained the matter to be seen.
