Agartala, Sept 13 (TIWN) Northeast India’s biggest jail with state of the art technology would be opened on October 2 – birthday of Mahatma Gandhi at Goutam Nagar in western Tripura’s Sipahijala district. Tripura’s Jail minister Manindra Lal Reang said Friday that the new jail built on 32.62 acres of land at a cost of Rs 62 crore would accommodate 975 prisoners, including 50 women and 25 VIP inmates.

“Second after central jail in Bengaluru (Karnataka) in terms of modernity, the central jail has been fitted with several automated close circuit televisions and several watch towers to keep vigilant round-the-clock on every nook and corner of the jail complex,” said the minister, who Thursday inspected the new jail along with senior officials.

All modern facilities, including computerised management of jail administration, separate play grounds for male and female prisoners and various entertainment systems would be available for prisoners.

“We do not want to call it a jail, we want to make it a truly correctional center,” said Reang, also a tribal leader belonging to Communist Party of India (CPI).
Tripura’s Chief Secretary Dr Sanjay Kumar Panda, jail department secretary Samarjit Bhowmik, engineer-in-chief Sunil Bhowmik, Sipahijala district magistrate Krishna Dulal Chowdhury and inspector general of prisons Pankaj Chakraborty among other senior officials have accompanied the minister.

The new jail expected to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Mr Manik Sarkar.

The 139-years old central jail in Agartala’s Banamalipur areas would be dismantled and a science college and a botanical garden likely to be made in its vast place.
