TPCC condemns for discontinuing the postal stamps on former PM Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi

AGARTALA, Oct 5 (TIWN): Along with the nation, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday staged a protest rally at Post Office Choumuhani against the decision to discontinue two postal stamps on former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Walking from Congress Bhawan to the head Post Office, the PCC leaders placed a deputation to the head Poster Master of the Post office and condemned the approach and attitude of the Central Government towards the Gandhi’s who have sacrificed a lot for the nation.

According to the leaders of the PCC, Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi stamps were a part of the "Builders of Modern India" theme, which has now been replaced by "Makers of India" to include many more names.

Altogether new series of 25 stamps has been recommended to release by the Philately Advisory Committee.

Following advice of the Philatelic Advisory Committee, a conclusion has finally been drawn, and definitive stamps in the honour of Shyama Prasad Mukherji, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Shivaji, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Bhagat Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Jayaprakash Narayan, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Ram Manohar Lohia, Subramania Bharati, Vivekananda, Mother Teresa, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and Maharana Pratap.

However, the stamps of Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and Mother Teresa have been retained.

Homi J Bhabha, JRD Tata, CV Raman and Satyajit Ray stamps have also been discontinued under the new theme.

During the protest, Opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman, Tripura Youth Congress President Sushanta Choudhury, Congress State president Birajit Sinha and other supporters were present.
