UDAIPUR, July 7 (TIWN): As part of the weeklong celebrations of Van Mahotsav, huge numbers of saplings were planted with the initiatives of the police administration of the Gomati District at Dhajanagar Police head quarter on Tuesday.
Speaking in the programme, Superintendent Police of Gomati District Prabir Majumder said that this initiative has been taken to create awareness amongst people about the benefits of plantation and protection of trees. The harm caused by cutting down of trees are supposed to create hazardous situation in the state, added.
It is necessary to understand that trees are an effective way to prevent global warming and reduce pollution, said other dignitaries. Stressing on the need for tree plantation, the dignitaries also urged the locals to plant trees to overcome deforestation in the state.
The declining number of trees has brought a major change in climate. So there is a dire necessity of festivals such as Van Mahotsav, to restore the forest cover in the country, claimed the dignitaries.
Van Mahotsav, annual tree-planting festival, is being celebrated in India from July 1 to 7 by planting new tree saplings. The festival was started in the year 1950 by the Ministry for Agriculture. Every year, under the patronage of various state governments, millions of saplings are planted all across India during the week.
Additional Superintendent Police of Gomati District Tapan Debbarma, Udaipur SDPO Ratan Das and OC's of the Udaipur sub-division remained present at the programme. The programme was presided over by Village Panchayat Pradhan of Dhajanagar Manik Debnath.
