Capital city turned hub for cricket betting, police in yawning siesta

Agartala, February 17 (TIWN): With the beginning of Cricket World Cup-2015, while a sturdy ring of gamblers is earning huge amount, at the same time, a vast number of gamblers including school goers and youths are losing everything. Even with the availability of information on the issue, police and detective department are reportedly turned tight-lipped instead of taking necessary steps against the gambling racket.

Taking the advantages of a major portion of ‘good-for-nothing’ police officers including DIB and SB branches, a section of bookies operate this illegal business through mobile phones and internet services sitting in the different hotels of the city without any restrain.

According to sources, cricket betting is reportedly going on rampant at Motor Stand, Kaman Chowmohani, Maharajganj Market and Battala market in the capital city- Agartala on every single match. The gamblers make bet in different ways like- match result, single ball chance, over-boundary, wicket down and many others, said the sources.

A source further informed that the gamblers use mobile phones and unknown SIM cards to operate the illegal act. The gamblers collect bet amount (right from Rs. 1000) from punters over mobile phones on the cricket match in ICC World Cup Cricket-2015. They also use software to keep detailed records of rates and bets to avoid disputes with punters later.

Following the cricket betting, reportedly the bookies also enjoy sexual activities and consuming drugs in some of the well-known hotels in the heart of capital city, said the source.

Though, all information is available with the police stations across the city, but surprisingly, police and other associated units are playing silent role over the issue by generating chance to bookies to for carrying the illegal business.
