AGARTALA, Dec 19 (TIWN): Alongwith the national level protest Tripura opposition parties have continued to stage protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). On Thursday SFI, TSU, CPI-M’s students wing held protest after yesterday another protest by Leftist youth wings. The SFI, TSU slammed the Modi Govt and its controversial, unconstitutional new law dividing religions, SFI and TSU also raised voice against the attacks on students and intellectuals who are joining in protest. Tripura Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) President, ex-MP Jitendra Choudhury has expressed his faith on the highest Court saying, he has full faith in the Court and hopefully, it will listen to the voice of crores of Indians who are fighting against ‘dividing Citizenship Amendment Act’, which has worried now the whole world already. Choudhury mentioned, even though the whole world is concerned about the new divisional law of India, but the Indian Govt has no mind to listen, rather it is going further to make a “Hindu Rastra” in future and thus wants to light the fire for the Hindu Rastra.

Nationally this protest is getting intensified.  Protests staged globally against this dividing law in the secular and democratic country.

Several opposition leaders agitating against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here on Thursday were detained by police.

Swaraj Abhiyan President Yogendra Yadav was detained from the Red Fort, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were imposed.

Appealing for peace, he asked people to continue the peaceful protest, but warned protesters not to commit any mistake that could dilute their rightful cause.

Left leaders including Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India chief D. Raja and Brinda Karat of the CPI-M were also detained at the Mandi House area.

Former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit was also detained at Mandi house as he reached to participate in the protest march from the Red Fort to the Shaheed Park.

On the other side, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has noted that there was a "robust debate" within India over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) and that Washington honours Indian democracy.

Asked by a reporter about Washington's reaction to the CAA, Pompeo said: "We honour Indian democracy as they have a robust debate inside of India on the issue that you raised, and the US will be consistent in the way that we respond to these issues, not only in India but all across the world.

Amid crackdown by police on the protestors opposing the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA), the Congress has criticised the decision to shut down the internet services in the National Capital.

Congress has issued a statement, saying: "It is the democratic right of every citizen to protest peacefully against the government. Imposing #Section144 and internet shutdowns are draconian measures to muzzle citizens by a government that is terrified of hearing what Indians have to say. The BJP should be ashamed."  The Congress which has opposed the CAB and now the CAA has been accused by the BJP of instigating the protests across the country. On Thursday, the police have detained Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit at Mandi House who said that he will come again to protest.

Dikshit said: "The police crackdown is uncalled for as police is working on the direction of the Union Government and is trying to suppress the dissenting voices, but the government has failed on it as more people are coming out on the streets to oppose the anti-people and the divisive CAA."  The party is at the forefront of the agitation against the CAA and scores of its leaders have approached the Supreme Court against the CAA.
