Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was an Indian stateswoman and central figure of the Indian National Congress. She was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, near her then Delhi residence by two Sikh security guards who wanted vengeance for authorizing a military attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar five months earlier.
