AGARTALA, Aug 21 (TIWN): Much awaited Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport’s new terminal to be functional by 2020, January. Works have been going on to shape the terminal by 2019, December whereas Govt has set target to inaugurate it in January 2020. Chief Minister Biplab Deb is reportedly communicating with the Central Govt for adding Tripura with Dhaka-Agartala flight service which carries passenger directly from Dhaka to Guwahati. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has already informed the State Govt that their ongoing works to make Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport will be completed in expected time but as the works were hampered due to the monsoon season or any other factor, then the declaration would be made by early 2020.However, from Transport Dept it has been confirmed that by December the new terminal in Agartala will be finished and by that time most likely the Dhaka-Agartala flight service also can be started.

Govt of Tripura is continuously pushing the Central Govt on this issue, said an official.

The flight crisis is now decreased a little due to new flights starting (recently the Indigo flight service for Delhi-Agartala).

To mitigate the ongoing flight crisis, Govt of Tripura on June month had requested the SpiceJet airline company to connect Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport under its Dhaka-Guwahati flight service.

In a letter L.H.Darlong, Principal Secretary to the Govt of Tripura has written to Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet regarding this.

The Govt asked the Director to land its flight in the Airport while it’s carrying passengers to Guwahati.

Agartala Airport is the second busiest Airport of Northeast, undoubtedly to bring profits for the SpiceJet.
