Tripura Govt sought ‘Special Package’ to end devastating flood problems permanently, demands to depute high level team by NITI Aayog

NEW DELHI / AGARTALA, June 16 (TIWN): Border-state Tripura in the Northeast, which has been suffering from massive flood problems each year for around 30 years, BJP led Govt of Tripura has thus demanded a permanent solution of the problem with the help of Central Govt. As every year floods are causing massive property damages, Govt’s expenditure due to relief camps and compensation, in the NITI Aayog meeting, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb that said that the State Govt is bound to invest huge funds per year from SDRF (State National Disaster Response Force).

Deb quoted, “There are 5 to 6 perennial rivers in the state namely Gomati, Deo, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai and Howrah. This rivers historically in last 30 years are causing massive floods led the State Govt to spend huge fund yearly”. 

Instead of handling problems every year, Biplab Deb said, “Central Govt may provide assistance to State Government to construct permanent, cemented embankment in phased and gradual manner”. He urged that Govt of India / NITI Aayog also to depute a high level team to study above problem and recommend a special package for 5 to 7 years period”.

After the NITI Aayog meeting held the Rastrapati Bhawan, the Chief Minister also has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Various demands for his state’s development was placed before the PM by Biplab Deb including roadway projects, flood problems and malaria like diseases which grips Tripura each year.

On Saturday, while addressing at the NITI Aayog meet, Biplab Deb said that the water-line route will make Tripura the gateway of Northeast.

Also various issues were placed and proposals given to centre for tourism industry’s development.

He urged for more CRS fund for the Northeast, public sector companies in India should be permitted to use 10% of their CRS fund in the Northeast, may pave the way for implementation of HIRA.

Deb urged Petroleum Ministry to re-exam the VAT issue with ONGC, causing losses to the Government of Tripura.
