AGARTALA, July 23 (TIWN): Tripura Agriculture Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Monday asserted, organic production should be the key of Agriculture, although Tripura is lagging behind in this field. Addressing in a workshop at Pragna Bhawan attended by Northeastern state’s officials and buyers under the banner of Outreach cum Buyer-Seller Meet” the Minister said so. The progarmme was conducted under the scheme of “Mission Organic Value Chain Development”. Agriculture Minister said, “In whole country, our Govt is targeting for Organic food culture and Tripura is also a part of the mission. We are not away from the target even though we are new Govt of around four months”.“It’s true that among all the Northeastern states, in case of organic productions Sikkim comes in the first row, whereas Tripura is far behind. It has been seen that the highest agricultural producer states as Punjab, Haryana are using too much fertilizers and as a result even though their productions are high but spreading dangerous diseases like cancer. That’s why organic production sector is very important to develop", he said. "The whole world is now eyeing for organic production and our country is also going in the same direction”, the Minister said. A good numbers of buyers attended the seminar and the Minister has appreciated the workshop’s initiative.

Referring own state’s credibility, Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said, “Our state may be small but Govt has taken initiative to boost its own production capacity. We have Queen Pineapple, which is made without any fertilizer. Thus pineapple itself is organic. We have jackfruit which is best in the country that is also organic”.

Pranajit Singha Roy further accepted that instead of heaving heavy potentialities in orange production the state is unable to meet the expectation level either in production or in case of marketing.

“Spiny Gourd is also made with organic fertilizer. So, items are there but we need to motivate the farmers more to harvest organic products”, he said adding the promise of doubling farmers' income by 2022.
