Sonamura, September 12 (TIWN): In another example of close co-ordination among Govt Depts, In two consecutive raids, substantial amounts of contraband Phensedyl Syrups, dried cannabis (ganja) and illegally stored domestic cylinders were recovered yesterday by a joint team of Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration, 29 Battalion BSF and Kalamchowra Police Station, from Madhuban area of Sonamura-Melaghar road and Boxanagar area.

Both the raids were conducted under the leadership of SDM Sonamura,  Subhasis Das. Acting on a tip off, the joint team first raided the house of Hanif Miah in Madhuban area on the Sonamura-Melaghar Road. Spanning about half-an-hour, the raid started at 3.45 pm and continued up to 4.15 pm.  During the course of the raid, 200 bottles of contraband Phensedyl Syrups containing intoxicating Codeine Phosphate were recovered from the house. The items were immediately seized by the Sr. Excise Inspector of Sonamura, Gopal Das. A case under NDPS Act has accordingly been lodged by the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration against Hanif Miah. Close on the heels of the raid, another raid was carried out at Boxanagar Market from 6 pm till 8.30 pm on the same day. Recently there have been complaints from the local public about illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes.

Besides, there have also been complaints about some unscrupulous elements building up stocks of such cylinders for profiteering depriving genuine customers. Therefore it became essential to identify and to take deterrent actions against such illegitimate use and storage of domestic LPG cylinders. During the raid, total of seven such LPG cylinders were recovered either while being utilized on commercial purposes, or stocked illegally in commercial spaces. An FIR has accordingly been lodged accordingly by the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration in the local Kalamchowra Police Station.  The joint team also recovered from an abandoned place nearby the Boxanagar market 240 bottles of Phensedyl and 2 Kg dried cannabis. The market value of the recovered items totals to 1.42 lakh.
