MP to give Rs 25 lakh to Sakshi, offers | BHOPAL / AGARTALA, Aug 19 (TIWN): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a Rs 25 lakh reward for Sakshi Malik, who won a freestyle wrestling bronze medal in the 58 kg category at the ongoing Rio Olympics. He also announced that the state will ensure proper training for the next Olympics for woman gymnast Dipa Karmakar, a Tripura girl, who missed an Olympic medal this time, in case she so desired. These ladies are a move to Indian womens’ entrance in athlete world and Madhya Pradesh is ready to create athlete artists. Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar missed out on a historic medal in the women's vault competition by a whisker as she finished a creditable fourth in the final of the Olympic Games here. Dipa averaged 15.066 points to finish fourth at the Rio Olympic Arena. Simone Biles of the US won the gold with an average of 15.966, while Maria Paseka (15.253) of Russia and Switzerland's Giulia Steingrubber (15.216) took home the silver and bronze medals respectively.Despite being disappointed at missing out on the medal, Dipa asserted that she is determined to train harder and do better at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo."I am happy to have come fourth. SDM seized huge numbers of rice bags, su | AGARTALA, Aug 19 (TIWN): Acting on a tip off, newly appointed Sadar SDM Summit Roy Chowdhury on Friday seized a total 15 bags of rice along with huge bags of wheat, Sugar and foreign liquors from MG Bazaar after information of illegal smuggling of rice bags were allegedly reported from the area. The officials, after receiving a tip off, raided the MG bazaar market shed area and seized the rice bags. The Sadar sub-divisional administration led by SDM- Sumit Roy Chowdhuy and officials of Food and excise department conducted the raid at MG Bazaar followed by a sudden raid at Lichu Bagan market shed. Based on secret information, Sub Divisional Magistrate- Sumit Roy Chowdhury, conducted raid in the Maharajganj and Lichu Bagan Market area However, concluding the raid at MG Bazaar, the team also raided Lichu Bagan market shed from where huge amount foreign liquor was seized along with rice bags. Reportedly no one was arrested in this raid. 17 injured in road mishap | SABROOM, Aug 19 (TIWN): 17 persons were injured including 5 seriously injured when a commander jeep TR03-2557 fell into a dense in Gagan Mouja area under ManuBazar PS. The incident took place at noon. 17 persons were injured but only few have ao far been identified. Nothing is yet finalized to repatriate B | AGARTALA, Aug 19 (TIWN): Although the Tripura government recently said it was ready to send back Bru refugees living in camps in the state to Mizoram but the final repatriation plan was yet to be formalised. Talking to TIWN correspondent, DM North Sandeep Mahatme said that nothing is finalised regarding repatriating Bru’s from Tripura as several protocols need to be followed as although Tripura government is ready but Mizoram government is not accepting the demand of the Bru’s.The Union home ministry has decided to repatriate around 37,000 Bru refugees from Mizoram, who have been living in six camps in North Tripura for the past 19 years, from November this year. Tripura chief secretary YP Singh earlier said that the Mizoram government would have to submit the final movement plan which is necessary to make the repatriation a success. Bru refugees have demanded security in Mizoram, cluster-based rehabilitation and at least a year's financial and social security package but the Lal Thanhawla government has not agreed to the demands. | 19-Aug-2016 |

Bangladesh approves Indo-Bangla Rail lin | AGARTALA, Aug 18 (TIWN): Bangladesh Government has recently approved to begin with the construction of laying 15 KM track at the side of Bangladesh and the work to begin soon. It is to be mentioned here that DPR for laying 5km of track in the India’s section is already submitteto DoNER ministry. However, the centre has sanctioned money for acquiring land and for laying of five km long tracks on the Indian side and the source claimed that the construction work will begin in this financial year. The Indian government has sanctioned around Rs 1,000 crore for a 15-km India-Bangladesh railway project, the source informed The union government has recently communicated to Tripura that it had sanctioned Rs 580 crore to lay the rail tracks and acquire required land in Tripura. On the other hand the external affairs ministry earlier agreed to provide Rs 400 crore to lay the new tracks and to acquire land in Bangladeshi territory. Indian and Bangladesh governments have decided to start a new rail link to ease surface transport. India will build a 15-km railway tracks linking Tripura’s capital Agartala with Bangladesh’s southeastern city of Akhaura, an important railway junction connected to Chittagong port, resource-rich Sylhet and Dhaka. An agreement to implement the railway project was signed between India’s former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina during her visit to India in January 2010. Dipa Karmakar revives Duleep Singh's gym | AGARTALA, Aug 18 (TIWN/IANS): Three decades after his death, the memory of soldier-turned-legendary gymnastics coach Duleep Singh has again come alive with Dipa Karmakar's performance at the Rio Olympics, focusing global attention on little-known Tripura. "Duleep Singh is the father figure of the Tripura gymnastics and Dipa Karmakar is the finest-ever creation of this tiny state," said Mantu Debnath, India's second Arjuna Award winner in gymnastics after Olympian Shyam Lal Khullar and Tripura's most famous gymnast before Dipa. "Due to the hard and devoted work of Duleep Singh, Tripura so far has claimed 18 national team titles and seven individual national titles and produced three Arjuna award winners," Debnath, who was cited in 1975, told IANS. Two of the Arjuna awardees, Mantu Debnath and Kalpana Debnath, trained under Singh. Dipa, the third, credits her success to coach Bisheshwar Nandi, who, in turn, is a Singh product. The 23-year-old Dipa, who had become the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, scored 15.066 points, a mere 0.15 less than eventual bronze winner Giulia Steingruber (15.216) of Switzerland in the final on August 14. Debnath said that Singh created an ambiance that attracts many youngsters to take to gymnastics in Tripura. Dipa Karmakar's coach Bisheswar Nandi ha | AGARTALA, Aug 17 (TIWN): In a long letter to the Secretary of the Tripura Sports Council on 9th February 2012 , the 57-year old Nandi had explained the threat to her career as emanating from long-time chief coach of Indian gymnastic federation and also at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala. "When I raised the issue of deliberate partialitity to pull Dipa down to second place in a tournament in Bangladesh, Bawa threatened to come to Agartala with a stick to chastise me," Nandi, himself a five time national champion, wrote in the letter. " I have told him to come with a pistol if he can," Nandi wrote in the letter, indicating his desperation. A copy of the letter is available with Nandi's contemporary and veteran gymnast Lopamudra Ghosh, who made it available to the writer. Ghosh lives in Calcutta now. Talking to TIWN correspondent, DM North Sandeep Mahatme said that both the routes including alternative national highway (NEC) and main national highway-NH8 (44) are giving passage to vehicles and every huge number of vehicles are entering the state. DM North further said that today 22 number of petrol tankers, followed by 32 diesel and 32 kerosine tankers will enter the state via national highway 8(44) and NEC and if the tankers continue to move frequently in the state it can be said that Tripura will never face fuel crisis. When asked about the status of the renovation he further said that alternative highway (NEC) is fully repaired and there is no problem in the route so far, however, the renovation for the main route that is nation highway 8(44) is under taken in 5 sections.
