AGARTALA, August 24 (TIWN): The Longtrai area of National Highway 44 continues to be in a dilapidated condition, yet PWD is not taking any initiative to renovate the road.
After BRO-78 get away from the liability of renovating the road, though PWD spent crores regarding the renovation, but the said area lies in a deplorable state. The road lies adjacent to the Dak Bungalow of PWD, headquarters of District Chief Engineer and SDO and the dilapidated condition continued since days. The slabs over the footpath made of cement constructed by the GREF got collapsed.
The only eyesore: potholes created in different areas of the said road. Regarding issue, Executive engineer of Ambassa PWD Surya Debbarma said, “We are acknowledged of the issue and are trying to sort it out”.
The NH 44 from Longtrai to Atharomura 43-mile is renovated and the old contractors renovated the road. As per the contract, though the renovation work has almost completed, yet there are works left. Furthermore, tenders were not floated before the BRO handed over the responsibility to the PWD. Though crores of rupees were invested every year on road construction and maintenance, but with every monsoon the condition if the road worsens.
While the department’s officials are entrusted with the charge of supervising construction works, the contractors engaged with the works do their jobs as per their own will as the officials never visit the site. PWD Circle officer Shyamalendu Bhowmik has been playing the role of mute spectator.
