AGARTALA, August 21 (TIWN): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied entry to former Congress MLA and president of the Tripura Progressive Grameen Congress Subal Bhowmik as a partner in the National Democratic Alliance during this three day camp in New Delhi. The party suggested him to merge with BJP alongwith his party and supporters, party sources said.

Asked about the issue, Bhowmik today said that he would be meeting on September 02 to decided on the next course of action on joining BJP.

“A delegation of fourteen party leaders including myself, NG Choudhury, Sadhan Choudhury, Kashinath Biswas, Sudarshan Choudhury, Basu Mog and others went to discuss our terms with the BJP leaders. We met Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, SS Ahluwalia, party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, party in-charge for Tripura Vijay Jolly, Tapir Gao and others. They suggested us to merge with BJP itself rather than join as NDA partners”, Bhowmik said.

“We are considering the factors. We will arrive at a solution on September 2”, he added.

Meanwhile, sources inside the BJP Tripura state committee stated that Bhowmik’s discussion with the central leaders didn’t go well about joining the party as well. The Grameen Congress leader met central leaders like Rajnath Singh, Shahnawaz Hussain, Vijay Jolly and others but the BJP Tripura general secretary (sangathanmantri) Sundar Kumar Paul gave negative opinion about Bhowmik following consultation with the state leaders, a highly placed source in the BJP Tripura state committee said.

The source said that Subal Bhowmik tried to approach BJP in the usual Congress style of giving priority to the central leaders. “Our party is now laying stress on the state units. His attitude to bypass the state committee itself showed that he wouldn’t fit in the BJP culture of inclusive politics”, the source added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earlier proposed Bhowmik a significant post in the party in exchange of merger of Tripura Progressive Grameen Congress inside the saffron camp. Bhowmik lost credibility of the party aft it had to forfeit its security deposit in both Parliament constituencies in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
