AGARTALA, July 29 (TIWN): Tripura’s Transport Department is contemplating to launch intelligent traffic system with automated signaling mechanism soon, official sources said. A highly placed source inside the state Traffic Department today said that computerized signaling system would be installed through intelligent traffic system. Funding for the project would be borne on a 90: 10 ratio by the centre and the state government, the source added.
A lower level official of the Department revealed earlier this week that that purchase orders were already placed for 15 cameras. These cameras would be handled by individual camerapersons on hire, the official said. He added that the authorities are expecting to start closed circuit camera network in the city area in phased manner.
Few major cities like Bangalore and Pune currently have CC camera networks operational. A scheme approved by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) recently approved a cluster programme of bus depots and intelligent traffic systems to be introduced in the capital with a fund amounting to Rs. 37 crore approved by JNNURM.
“We will try to monitor incidents of traffic rules violation on real time basis. Automated signaling system would help reduce accidents to a large extent”, the official stated.
