Unrest swells in Tripura University against alleged malpractice of VC

AGARTALA, Jan 29 (TIWN): The Tripura (Central) University authority had to cancel interview process of associate professor and professor posts in four important departments and removed Dean, faculty of arts and commerce following pressure from teaching faculties against incumbent Vice Chancellor Prof A K Ghosh on corruption charges and nepotism today.

The university has instituted an inquiry against the candidature of the aspirants and the screening process of the candidates who were called for interview to the posts of associate professors in Department of Rural Development, Education, Microbiology and Molecular Biology.

The university teachers have gheraoed the Vice Chancellor, Deans, Register and top officials of the university till evening yesterday since morning demanding cancellation of the interview process of the associate professors, institute inquiry into the process of candidature screening, fresh constitution of the recruitment committee and undertake appropriate action against the accused officials.

The teachers alleged that there was nepotism in the screening process and vested interest quarter called under qualified candidates, closed to Vice Chancellor Prof Ghosh without maintaining any norms and guidelines. The candidates were called for interview those who otherwise, satisfied the Vice Chancellor and involved in nefarious activities and indulging financial and moral corruption, teachers alleged.

“The recruitment committee headed by Vice Chancellor Prof Ghosh had denied the genuine candidates without citing any reason and called under qualified his aides in interview. He followed the unfair means in the recruitment of librarian, deputy librarian, finance officer and many other important posts of the university. The Vice Chancellor is also involved in a large scale corruption of procuring e-book in the university. The allegations were reported to Ministry of Human Resource several times but there is no action that made Prof Ghosh desperate to continue such practices,” alleged angry teachers.  

They further alleged during his tenure Prof Ghosh did not do anything for development of the university and quality improvement of the institution except bring corrupt and under qualified people in the important posts.

“We demand step down of the Vice Chancellor and there must a high level enquiry into each and every recruitment, purchase and tender process of the university during the tenure of Prof Ghosh. He has been indulging corruption in every step compromising the future of the institution,” they alleged.

Prof Ghosh engaged his daughter in Rural Development department of the university under a project run by an assistant professor whom he wanted to elevate as associate professor. He dedicated a furnish building and providing funding to one NGO run by his wife, they alleged.

He illegally procured e-book of Rs 10 Cr, every year he has been procuring same type of furniture from a particular suppliers to the tune of Rs 2-3 Cr and he purchased high configuration laptops and mobile phones at least twice in a year for his personal use, the teachers stated adding that he promoted an teacher to Professor who did not take any class in past three years in department of Hindi.  

“He did not allow any grant or financial support to the students and research scholars unless they are not recommended by his preferred teachers. Moreover, there is no step for academic improvement and professional excellence in the university during Prof Ghosh tenure,” they pointed out.

Meanwhile, Dean (Arts & Commerce) Prof Satyadeo Poddar who has been removed from the post following the agitation of the teachers raised voice against the administration and said, “Whatever allegations raised by the teachers are directly against the VC. In all the cases he was head of all the committees and I was mere a member. But to save his skin I am being malign and victimised by the university administration. There is no direct allegation of any unfair means against me even then most unethical manner I am removed and I doubt this may by a plot of the corrupt gang.”
