AGARTALA, Jan 25 (TIWN): Ahead of Republic Day-2017, atleast 500 bottles of phensedyl were recovered by Churaibari police from a house at Churaibari, which has created much tension at that area. The tension was increased further when a pistol was recovered from that house. Churaibari PS O/C Bijoy Sen getting informed by his secret sources seized a huge number of Phensedyl bottles and a pistol. However the main accused Aftab Ali managed to escape from the spot. Source reported that like Ali, there are many families who are living by smuggling profession and if needed they also murder innocents. Such an incident has become a common issue at Churaibari area. Churaibari which is the main door-way from other Northeast states to Tripura has turned as the den of mafias. Many times it was reported that not only smugglers but the gate is acting as the corridor for NE based militants. Due to lack of proper initiative, any illegal items keep on entering the state via Churaibari dropgate.

The situation becoming worse, as even after so many crimes held in that area, no inner permit card is asked from outsiders whereas for Tripura people atleast 3 NE states seek inner permit card.

Several such incidents had occurred earlier which has been continued till today. Allegations were raised against some police personnel over taking bribe from the truck drivers. The drivers also sometime manage to feed the police and arrive here in Agartala with those taxable goods or contraband items.

Phensedyl is extremely popular in Bangladesh where liquor consumption is banned. Taking advantage of the situation, some unscrupulous traders of Tripura are reportedly smuggling the cough syrup across the border and it earns huge money.

Atleast 300 vehicles are entering Tripura daily without giving any tax to the state govt. by bribing officials and using the alternative road-way of NH-44, but bribe-happy police and revenue authorities are playing mute spectator’s role and busy in collecting money and thus grabbing a lion’s share of the illegal business.

But often Tripura DGP K Nagraj claims that the crime rate has been drastically decreased in Tripura. “A comprehensive analysis indicates that a total of 4048 cases registered during 2016 against 4864 cases in 2015. In terms of percentage over all registration of crime has down by 16 % during 2016 as compare to the previous year”, said Nagraj. But in reality across the state either militant attack threat from other NE states or the drug, phensedyl business---- the crime rate is just spiking up in the state.
