UDAIPUR,June 17 (TIWN) : Inspite of the full-loaded power generation from the First Unit of OTPC 726.6MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine(CCGT) Thermal Power Plant in Palatana, Tripura is suffering from the prolonged power cuts twice or thrice almost everyday, especially during the ongoing heatwave. Since June 1, OTPC is having full-loaded(350MW) power generation from the Unit-I and still the miseries of load-shedding continue making the life of the people almost unbearable. Expressing his surprise over the issue, a top level OTPC engineer told TIWN over phone on Tuesday afternoon, " Since the mid-night of June 1 Unit-I is having full-loaded generation without a single occasion of halt. I don't see any visible reason for power cuts in Tripura now."

It is to be mentioned here that the Performance Guarantee Test(PGT) of the First Unit of the OTPC plant was completed successfully on June 1. And since then OTPC is supplying uninterrupted power to National Power Grid Bongaingaon ranging from 338-340MW. Still the state is mysteriously facing power cuts twice and thrice everyday. The Half-Yearly anf Pre-Test examinations in most of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education affiliated schools will beging from 19th June. Thus, power cut is genuinely causing disturbances in the preparations of students. Moreover the football lovers can't watch the LIVE coverages of FIFA World Cup matches.

In this connection TIWN had a telephonic chat with the CMD of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited(TSECL) Shyamal Kumar Roy, who said, "Actually the crisis continues due to the shortage of power supply compare to the peak hour demand. At present the peak hour demand in Tripura is 250MW. And Tripura's internal generation is 95MW."  From its share of OTPC's Unit-I North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Committee(NERLDC) is giving the state 85-95MW per day depending on the availability of power.  But the CMD said that Tripura is only getting 15-20MW from Central pool. As such there is an approximate shortage of 40-45MW during peak hour. However, CMD Shyamal Kumar Roy told TIWN that TSECL is not buying additional power to cope with the current situation.

Meanwhile, the Trial Run of the Unit-II of OTPC's plant may begin from August said a high level TIWN sources in the OTPC. The sources add that the BHEL technicians are now closely observing the preliminary processes ahead of the Trial Run. As usual during the Trial Run, BHEL will gradually increase the load. And then the engineers will conduct a 72 hours non-stop full-loaded(363.3MW) power generation as it was done with the Unit-II. If the Trial Run yields desired results, BHEL may declare the UNIT-II ready for Commercial Generation. According to TIWN sources Commercial Generation from the UNIT-II may begin by the end of 2014.
