AGARTALA, June 16 (TIWN): Surrendered insurgents under the banner of JACC, JARC and JAC today threatened to launch massive agitational programme if the government doesn’t convene an emergency meeting to stop ‘atrocities’ on the returnees. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, the Trio-coalition outfits- JACC, JARC and JAC today said in response to the government appeals, insurgents had surrendered before the state machineries to lead a normal life. As per the agreement, all the pending cases were supposed to be withdrawn against the surrendered militants.
However, the hard reality is that the government has failed to fulfill the commitment.
“In this context, it is to be noted that the police are now on the rampage to arrest the hapless returnees and to harass the members of their families. Surprisingly, in a heinous and rampageous move, the police are now arresting a large number of returnees indiscriminately who are presently detained in the judicial custody”, they said in the letter.
To evade arrest, most of returnees are presently absconding and its has come to the notice that for fear of arrest and torture, a section of disappointed returnees are reported to have been chosen the path to commit suicide, they said.
“Strictly speaking, the ongoing police atrocity is tantamount to human right violation. As a result, at the same time, we have the honour to submit a humble prayer to stop the sensitive and rampageous man-hunt operation by the police”, they said.
They urged the government to convene a meeting to solve the problem. “We will wait till June 21 to know the government response. If our demands remain unheeded, the surrendered militants will start mass agitation after June 21” said Rabindra Reang, general secretary of Joint Action Rehabilitation Committee (JARC), a committee of former extremists.
