ASI likely to maintain of rock cut images at Chabimura

AGARTALA, May 29 (TIWN): Archeological Survey of India (ASI) agreed in principal for maintenance of Chabimura, the archaeological site at Devtamura, dates to the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries, said Asutosh Jindal secretary of tourism department.

Speaking to reporters at secretariat on Thursday evening, said that Milind Chawlay, Superintendent archeologist from Guwahati  visited the site at Devtamura recently and  hinted that ASI is willing to take the maintenance and preservation of Chabimura. Archaeological sites at Unakoti, Pilak, Udaipur and Boxanagar are under the maintenance of ASI. 

Chabimura is a hill range in Gomati district includes colossal carvings of the images of Shiva and Parvati. The purpose of the carvings and the artists who carved them are unknown. The statues are carved on the steep sloping rock exposures of the Kalahari Hills which drains into the Gomati River. There are in all 37 rock cut images which also include images of Ganesha, Kartikeya, Mahishasuramardini, Durga and many others.

Tourism secretary also informed that he visited Neer Mahal today morning to review the progress of retrofitting fit work presently undergoing. He said the work likely to be completed by April 2015.A historical site renovation agency from South India is currently engaged in retrofitting work of the Neermahal. After extraction of lime plaster from inside walls of the palatial structure specially designed steel plates are used to encase the building in a sort of metallic cage to ease the effects of earthquakes. The estimate cost for retrofitting work is Rs 7 crore.

Retrofitting work started at the Neermahal in Tripura as a part of the historical site restoration initiative of the state government. Built in 1930 by Maharaj Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, Neermahal was the leisurely water abode of the Tripura monarchs.
