AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN):In distribution of portfolios, Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not make happy the most resourceful and potential Northeast Indian states as well as second largest population of the county, speaks Bengali. Bengalis are unhappy that Modi did not accommodate any Bengali speaking minister in his cabinet. There are at least two BJP MPs elected from Bengali community and one Mr S S Alluwalia who could speak finest Bengali and living in North Bengal but none got any berth in the ministry.“Though Modi takes Arun Jaitely and Smriti Irani in his cabinet with most important portfolios despite being lost the election, yet the largest speaking Bengali is still unrepresented in Modi’s cabinet, which has hurt the community at large,” said a senior minister of Tripura government.

He however, pointed out in spite of political differences, like other communities Bengali also deserve to have their representative in the Modi’s cabinet, since he is propagating holistic and equal pace of development for each and every Indians.

On the other, Independent Charge of Ministry of development of north eastern region (DoNER) to a former army chief, V K Singh has triggered mixed reaction in the region.

After Arun Souire during Vajpayee regime, all of his successors were from Northeast for past 10 years in UPA – I & II. And this is for the first time former Army Chief has been given the responsibility of the region.

Northeast does not have a good impression about Indian security forces including Army because of implications of controversial AFSPA and large scale violence and bloodshed in counter insurgency operations over the years.

Giving responsibility of DoNER ministry to a person from hardcore army background will certainly make the people of the region unhappy only because he belongs to army and northeast has two other ministers in Modi’s cabinet, says Sunil Kalai, an assistant professor Tripura (Central) University and a leading media critic.

Kalai views the country have much aspiration from Narendra Modi led government and it could have been better if he choice a person who has detail knowledge about northeastern issues and of course has feeling for the region.

On contrary, Subrata Roy, a leading entrepreneur of Tripura opines it does not matter who got the portfolio of DoNER what important is the attitude of the government towards northeast. He says, DoNER ministry could not able to make any remarkable change in terms of infrastructural development of the region though there were at least three predecessors of General V K Singh in DoNER from Northeast.

“The minister can’t do much unless cabinet and party have clear cut plan of action and time bound deliverable mandate for the development of Northeast,” Roy attributed.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan released the portfolio allocation of 46 ministers, including 24 cabinet ministers, of the government sworn in Monday evening.
