Agartala, May 20 (TIWN) A joint team of Border Security Force (BSF), state police and administration today swooped down upon fifty houses of two villages – Taibandal and Kalamkhet near the Indo-Bangla international border of Sonamura subdivision in Sipahijala district today and seized the contraband items.
Acting on a tip-off Security forces have seized 2000 KGs of cannabis worth Rs. one crore, police said.
The Sonamura subdivision, having 76 km long border out of Tripura’s 856 km border with Bangladesh is considered to be the paradise of the smugglers.
In a similar raid in the last month of the last week, security forces seized equal amount of cannabis from different other villages.
With the posting of a new SDM, Subhasish Das the raids against the cannabis and other contrabands got momentum and so far six such raids were conducted in the subdivision in last two months.
Lot of eyebrows were raised today when thousands of people blocked the Dhanpur main road near the Border Outpost of BSF for about one and half hours in the mid sun apparently for no reason.
When a press team arrived there and asked about their demands, they kept mum.
However, the insiders said it was a demonstration to put pressure on the administration to suspend raids against the smuggling, which according to them is their livelihood and they made such road blockades at the advice of a section of civil police who had nexus with the smugglers.
