AGARTALA, Aug 13 (TIWN): Debutant Olympian Karmakar finished eighth in the qualifying round to reach the individual vault final in artistic gymnastics at the quadrennial multi-discipline games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to enter the final on her debut at the quadrennial multi-discipline games when she finished eighth in the qualifying round but now question arises how far will be Dipa successful as Rio’s deadly environment might hit Dipa’s health and simultaneously her performance at the Rio. The first woman from the country to feature in the lineup of gymnasts at the Olympics, Karmakar succeeded in performing the difficult 'Produnova' routine to secure 14.850 points after two attempts, but had to undergo a nervous wait for hours to find out that she had made the final after all other groups of gymnasts had completed their routines. When she ended her routine, she was placed sixth in the vault apparatus, but eventually dropped to the eighth position as some high-scores later altered the standings. It was a tense wait for Karmakar and millions of Indian sports followers before her place in the final was confirmed. Making the top-eight cut in her favourite vault, Karmakar will return to the spotlight in the final that is slated for August 14. It is to be mentioned here that the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press rising tension among the athletes who will be performing in the Olympic.

The results of a 16-month study conducted for the Associated Press released found that Rio’s waterways are still full of human sewage with bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness.

While athletes are at risk during competition, the 300,000 to 500,000 foreigners who are expected to visit Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic Games also fear to face the possibility of similarly falling ill.

The study commissioned by the AP found that samples of sand from the famous beaches at Copacabana and Ipanema had high levels of infectious adenovirus.

However the massive pollution in the Rio’s environment is posing serious threat for the athletes who have already moved out for the venue.
