AGARTALA, May 6(TIWN): A rusted cannon was recovered on Tuesday morning from dense forest of Gandhacherra sub –divison under Tripura’s Dhalai district.

SP of Dhalai, Ipper Manchak talking to TIWN said that it’s true a massive cannon was sighted by personnels of 12th battalion of TSR, when they were out for routine jungle operation.

The TSR personnel found some metal object covered by weeds, after removing the weeds they found the object was an artillery cannon. They tried to lift the cannon and bring it the  base camp, it was so heavy they failed to move it., said SP.

Later when it was brought to the notice of higher  authorities by the TSR personnel’s about the cannon. SP told that tomorrow, extra manpower will be pressed into action for bringing  back the cannon.

But the size of the cannon suggests that it may belong to the World War – II period. It may be recalled that in 2102, the   Assam Rifles have discovered the crash site and a propeller of an American plane, which had crashed in the dense jungles of Tripura during World War II, after a monthlong search.

World War II had continued for six years from September 1, 1939 to the unconditional surrender of Japan in August 1945 in the wake of the atomic bomb blasts on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9 respectively.During this period, hundreds of planes went down in Southeast Asia, including the dense jungles of the Northeast.
