AGARTALA / KANCHANPUR, June 9 (IANS): The peace talks between the Centre MHA team and several militant outfits in the Northeastern region has been ended up without any solution, as the Brus are unwilling to leave Tripura with any kind of compensation. MHA officials along with Satyendra Garg, the Joint Secretary, in-charge of Northeast in Home Ministry came in Tripura on June 3 and held meeting with the Chief Secretary of Tripura Y P Singh visited Kanchanpur on June 4. At Kanchanpur Bru refugee camp, Snadeep Mahatme, North DM, Punit Agarwal Secretary of Re-habilitation Dept. had been present and held meeting with Brus for the development of the Mizo-repartition issue, but Home Ministry officials could not resolve the issue as Bru are strict about their demands from Mizo Govt. Brus’s residing over Tripura Kanchapur, has created a kind of turmoil as day by day they are exposing themselves as a violent group creating turmoil at kanchanpur and causing continuous clashes with the locals of that area.

Talking to the Chief Secretary of Tripura Y P Singh on Wednesday, he said that the exact outcome of the meeting is not yet clear to him as its being looked after by Punit Agarwal, Secretary of Revenue (including Relief and Rehabilitation and Disater Management).

However, when TIWN contacted Mizoram Govt officials and Bru representatives,  it was learnt that  19 years Bru-repatriation issue remained unsolved  but ethnic clashes among the Brus and locals are alarmingly increasing without any solution in sight.

Following the violent communual clashes among Bengali locals and Bru settlers on May 15 at Kanchanpur,North Tripura, the Home Ministry Official Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary, in-charge of Northeast in Home Ministry had arrived in state and visited Kanchanpur refugee camp to take stock of ground situation and pursue two decades old Bru refugee repatriation to Mizoram with Tripura and Mizoram Govt officials.

Bru refugees burnt and damaged atleast 26 local’s homes at Kanchanpur on May 15 causing flare-up of communual riot in Kanchanpur Hilles. Tripura Govt. reportedly after the incident, asked the Central govt. and Mizoram Govt. to take initiatives for Brus repatriation as it causing internal clashes.

However, after 20 days of the clash, the MHA Northeast India Division Joint Secretary arrived in Tripura but no solution has been come out after the issue.

On June 3 after completing a meeting with the Tripura Govt. officials, Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary in-charge of Northeast of the Union Home Ministry, told reporters,"The Central government has been holding peace talks with several militant outfits in the northeastern region. The talks are progressing positively."

"Government's policy is to hold talks with the militant groups that shun violent activities. The Centre is closely observing the situation in the northeast and bordering areas," Garg said.

But it’s to be mentioned here that peace talk has failed to diminish the violence emerging inside the state. For example before the Bru’s suicide a peace talk was done to re-unite Bengali and Brus on May 5. But even-after that peace talk also, a violence emerged again on May 15, centering on that Bru’s suicide. Then they(Brus) damaged 26 houses at Kanchanpur District.

It was expected after the peace-talk held between Bru and MHA officials the situation will be better now, but tension again increasing here with unsolved Bru repartition issue.

About 31,300 Reang tribals, who call themselves "Bru", have been living in seven makeshift camps in northern Tripura's Kanchanpur areas adjoining Mizoram for the past 19 years. They had fled after an ethnic violence in Mizoram following the killing of a Mizo forest officer at the Dampa Tiger Reserve.

MHA official also said that "Tripura and Mizoram are the most peaceful states in the northeast India,", but avoided the pending re-habilitation issue of Brus and their increasing violence in state. MHA official are also unknown about IPFT, NLFT’s, Islamic Terrorists continuous attacks upon the state.
