KAMALPUR, June 6 (TIWN): Almost 8 to 10 kanis of land with harvest covered with slit, 15 to 16 houses got water stricken and 10 houses got demolished at Ghantacharra of Kulai under Ambassa sub-division during the torrential rain of the night before yesterday. All those happening occurred as the sluice gate could not lift to make the risen water flow freely.
On the night before yesterday, a heavy torrential rain showered on Ambassa, Kulai and adjoining areas. At the Ghantacharra area the rain caused heavy havoc. It got disclosed that, the havoc and flood situation occurred due to the reluctance and negligence of local panchayat and Water Resource department. Due to their negligence, the sluice gate could not be lifted timely and as a result the ceased water caused flood.
According to the local people, the sluice gate was constructed in 2007-08 fiscal for flood control and irrigation. In 2014, two local youths were appointed on contingency basis against a monthly wages of 3,450 rupees which would be provided from the PDF fund.
But, in last two years none of those youths got even a single paisa. And they stop working. In the meantime, none of the authorities found it necessary to look into the condition of the sluice gate. Due to rust one of the gates got fixed and could not be moved.
The other got congested due to wastes and forest materials that people used to throw in the canals which poured water into the pool. As a result, when the rain water ceased in the pool the situation could not be controlled. BJP Ambassa Mondal President Gopal Sutradhar who visited the spot demanded quick and permanent remedy so that such situation could not emerge in future.
