Plantation drive in abundance on World Environment Day

AGARTALA, June 5 (TIWN): It’s that time of the year again when a number of tree-planting programmes among other events are held across the State to celebrate what is called the World Environment Day.

Keeping in line with the trend, series of program are chalked out a weeklong schedule which includes awareness programmes wherein several awareness program will be created about environment protection and tree plantation.

While tree saplings are being given out to people to plant them, various programmes such as quiz competitions, seminars etc., are also being organised on the occasion.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is, “Go wild for life-zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade.”

As a part of the program Minister Shahid Chowdhury also planted saplings to mark the celebration of World Environment day at Chanmari on Sunday.

Addressing the program Minister Shahid Chowdurry said that It is very important to plant trees as with enormous deforestation many of the wild life are getting extinct from the jungle, resulting the culture of the state to die. However, with planting of trees the wildlife can be saved and can be enriched.

He further stressed on the importance of planting trees. Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. Over one-fourth of forest dependent wildlife species use dead and dying trees for food, shelter, and cover.

He also said that it is very important to spread the awareness of planting trees among people and portray the need of planting and tending of trees, as trees are one of the best ways to prevent global warming and reduce pollution. World is celebrated as a festival of life, a crusade to save mother earth.
