AGARTALA, June 5 (TIWN): Following the massive landslide at Atharamura hill range has collapsed the NH 44 which is said to be the lifeline of the state which connects the landlocked state with rest of the country. Talking to TIWN correspondent, Assam's Karimganj district Executive Engineer said that due to the landslide at the Atharamura hill range the NH44 has collapsed adding much more woes for the common people. It is to be mentioned here that NH44 is in poor condition for past three consecutive weeks and this landslide has added much more problem. Executive Engineer (Silchar Division) nothing can be done until the monsoon season is over. The NH has literally turned into a paddy field as the black top has been washed away in torrential rain and which has totally ceased movement of vehicle entering and moving out of Tripura. National highway 44 is one such road which gets worsened even for small rains.

The condition of the road deteriorated due to heavy rains. As it is the only highway which connects Tripura with the rest of the country, the transport completely blocked.Thousands of vehicles stranded at Assam’s Lowerpoah area as the Assam-Agartala national highway virtually turned into paddy field due to heavy monsoon since April.

Incessant rainfall over past few days has yet again left the NH44 in a pitiable condition. Due to the rain, vehicle movement was nearly stopped with the continuous water logged various spots of the road.

On the one hand the authority says that the maintenance continues round the clock in the year, question arises if maintenance is carried out in the entire year why splash of rain disrupts the traffic movement in the NH44. The deplorable condition  of National Highway 44, the only road connectivity that links mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura has for a long time now remained a harrowing experience for helpless commuters.

And it continues to give horrific experience to the people with zero improvement in the renovation of the road. About hundreds of vehicles were stranded at the National highway due to the water log.

Frequent disruption of vehicular movement, seasonal landslides and alarmingly high rates of tragic accidents that claims scores of lives, have become the order of the day, but so far none of the authorities responsible for the day-to-day upkeep of the arterial road have come to the rescue of the commuters.

The present road turns from its original shape into a muddy or dusty road, depending on whether it is sunny or rainy, and the commuters have no option but to travel through this long stretch terrible road.
