AGARTALA, June 5 (TIWN): Howrah which is the life-line of water service for Agartala is being polluted every minute due to both domestic sewage and other pollutants that are being dumped in to the river untreated.

The Howrah River’s Pollution is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost threatening a danger to the lives of the people.

Water of Howrah river is the main source of water for Agartala city and is also said as the life-line for Agartala, however, days are not far when the city will face severe crisis of water if the pollution continues at this large level.

Despite CM’s several plea to the dwellers along the river to curb the pollution of the river water the pollution still continues in the river. Dumping of human excreta and solid waste has immensely resulted to the pollution of the river water. Continuous cleaning of clothes, washing of utensils and bathing of the cattle is the major source of the pollution.

There are no major industries in the city, main causes of pollution of water bodies including Howrah River is the contamination of human waste (septage) with the water bodies, resulting contamination of the water.

Improper sanitation measurements,   untidy dumping of regular waste products in state has turned the state into a dumping ground.

However, amid such poor condition cleanliness in the state, the land locked state clamours for the celebration of World Environment Day on Sunday.

Along with the crippled roads, stinky roads add much more woes to the common people. City stinks; road side dumped with garbage, yet no initiative taken to clean the mess on the city roads.

The main junction of the city Battala market stinks due to dumping garbage.

Though the garbage bins are being cleaned by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), it has been reported that accept the garbage bins the rest of the area are not cleaned and there is no regularity in cleaning the garbage.

Similarly, the interior part of the Maharajganj bazaar also stinks due to piles of garbage in the market area.

“The garbage gets piled up regularly. After the waste is cleared, a few people come and dump it again, and during the night, hotels and a few eateries also dump waste in open sites. Due to which it stinks at the area” claimed a local.
