KAMALPUR, June 1 (TIWN): The superstitions and befooling of people in the name of religion remained as a long cherished and deep rooted social evil in the country. Even the state of the so-called and self-styled ‘alternative’ rulers could not get rid of the problem.
The witch-craft, the entering of Gods and Goddesses in the bodies of the common men became very common in the state. And such practice touched its extreme on 24 th May last when such a god-woman Shanta Debnath killed two other women namely Baby Das and Manju Shukladas with the help of her hubby Biplab Majumder at Bhnuiya Para at South Chandrapaur under Udaipur.
An eleven-member team of Science and Rationalist Association visited the area on 29 th May last. They enquired into the matter and found the cause behind such inhumane behaviour.
The god-woman Shanta was a graduate of Bio Science from Belonia College. Her husband Biplab Majumder was a class-VII passed youth. Their love relationship which turned into elopement and marriage could not provide them with much comfort in their life. The family with two daughters namely Mahua (17) and Radhika (06) had to run their day to day course with a tough fighting against poverty.
However, Shanta had a good number of students and a beauty parlor at her residence. Still to feel her need she became a devotee of Goddess Manasa (the Hindu goddess of snakes and lotus) some eight years ago. Recently, for last one year, she started her trade of magic remedies. And in that course, Baby and Manju became her customers.
The hysteria that attacked Shanta started to show some adversities recently. She started to treat even her family members and her daughters as bad for her progress. She often claimed that, the family members would invite ghosts inside the residence. And then she would treat them with inhuman tortures. In such a torture, Baby and Manju were cut into pieces by Shanta with the help from Biplab as Shanta found ghosts inside them.
The Association discussed the matter with the local people in details. They appealed the locales to stand against any such possibility in future. The local people also expressed their determination to fight against any such ills in the coming days. However, how long could the commoners combat such things remained a question.
