AGARTALA, May 21 (TIWN): Overflow of drain water, improper sewage system, narrow roads, and poor maintenance creates massive water log in the Agartala city from Saturday morning following the incessant rain in the state.

Heavy rain, coupled with lightning, hit the city early in the morning, leading to power cuts in majority areas and uprooting of many trees, including those on the main thoroughfares. Roads in colonies were waterlogged and road in several areas were filled with water, affecting vehicular movement.

While the roads were blocked in several areas the downpour was welcomed by the people reeling under sweltering heat with unusually high temperatures this year. The temperature dropped quite significantly to below 30 degrees with the rain’s impact.

So called cover drain system has led to overflow of drain water resulting flood like situation since Saturday   morning following the moderate shower in the city.

The commuters claimed the downstream waterway of the drain has been completely blocked that has resulted in accumulation of water and flooding on the upstream side. The water has started coming onto the road and there is a threat of the road being blocked as this is a very high traffic corridor between Melarmath to Kaman Chowmuhani.

The so-called decision after which the AMC authority closed all drains by concrete cover, the cleaning of soil and garbage was stopped resulting chocked drains as it cannot carry water and the water floods randomly on the streets.

The residents allege that the drains are being filled up with mud and debris, which has been leading to constant flooding in the area and affecting traffic movement as well.

Some of the internal roads were inundated for hours. There were also reports of rain water causing damage to shops and housing blocks. There is no proper system to drain out water accumulating on roads. This leads to water logging and makes life miserable for citizens.

The long rule of CPI-M both in the state and Agartala Municipal Corporation have failed to develop infrastructures in the corporation area. Whereas, with zero development in infrastructures, Agartala is termed as one of the best city in the country by the ruling party.

At the end, all they did is closing all drains open tops with concrete covering so that no one need to clean mud, soil, and garbage from drains. As a result, after little rain, clogging drains force water flooding the streets and roads turn into drains.
The rainwater has inundated and effected businesses heavily at Orient Chowmuhani,Sakuntala Road, RMS Chowmuhani, Banamalipur, Town Pratapgarh . People living in the low lying areas complained that the slightest of downpour can flood their houses due to lack of infrastructure facilities.
