AGARTALA, May 19 (TIWN): Although slowly and gradually, but BJP is emerging as a major threat to the opposition party like Congress in the political scenario. The situation can be better explained with the situation where BJP has already marked its presence in the recently concluded Assam election where the party has almost wrest Assam from Congress.

Silently but steadily the BJP is emerging as a major threat to the beleaguered Congress in Assam electoral politics. Nothing illustrates this better than the polling percentage achieved by the BJP in the just-concluded Assam polls.

After its best performance so far in the recently conducted Tripura bi-polls, BJP now threatens the existence of the major parties in the state.

The recent developments in the NE political scenario has widened up the options of various political parties.

In the outgoing Assembly in Assam, the Congress had 78 seats while the BJP had only 5. AIUDF had 18 seats while current BJP allies Bodo People's Front (BPF) and AGP had 12 and 10 seats respectively.

Among the prominent candidates are chief minister Tarun Gogoi from Titabor, Speaker of the outgoing Assembly Pranab Gogoi from Sibsagar, former Union minister and prominent tea tribe leader Paban Singh Ghatowar of Congress from Moran, Union minister and BJP's chief minister candidate Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli(ST), Jorhat LS MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa against Tarun Gogoi from Titabor and former Congress minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who joined the BJP after leading dissidence again Tarun Gogoi from Jalukbari.
