AGARTALA, May 1 (TIWN): United forum of banks union on Sunday observed May Day in state bank at Melarmath branch office.
The program was marked in present of Power minister Manik Dey.
May Day also known as Labour Day or International Workers' Day celebrated every year on 1st May. This day is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and also celebrated unofficially in many other countries.
May Day originates from the United States labor union movement in the late 19th Century, particularly the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work per day.
May Day is also known as Labour Day and is celebrated on 1 May each year. It is a national and bank holiday that corresponds to the International Workers’ Day that is celebrated in many countries around the world proclaiming the international labour movement.
The history of May/Labour Day goes back to 1886 in Chicago, USA, when a gathering of people during a general strike for the eight-hour workday became violent. A bomb was thrown into the crowd, police began to shoot and dozens of people were killed or injured.
Trade Unions affiliated to different political parties today celebrated the May Day with zeal and enthusiasm in the state.
Leaders and volunteers of the trade unions owing allegiance to CPIM, Congress and other various labour organizations celebrated the day by hoisting their respective union flags at various centres.
