AGARTALA, April 25 (TIWN): Though State Government had adopted number of measures to prevent water pollution, but the recent steps adopted by them does not result in fruitful measures.

Due to this, the major source of water, Howrah which is considered as the lifeline of Tripura and other water bodies becoming worse day by day. River Howrah-one of the main river of Tripura is no longer able to maintain its purity. Pollution of river water has taken a horrific shape and the water of river Howrah is circulated in major parts of the city.

Even after Chief Minister Manik Sarkar made a plea to the slum dwellers along side of Howrah River to keep the river clean yet the pollution of the river is worsening day by day. The river water get contaminated due to practice of manual cleaning of septic tanks, direct connection of overflow pipes of septic tanks into storm water drain, relatively large number of kaccha latrines and practice open defecation.

As per the report of Tripura State Pollution Control Board, Howrah River becomes grossly polluted in Agartala city due to the garbage’s being dumped into the river.

The Howrah River’s Pollution is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost threatening a danger to the lives of the people.

Water of Howrah river is the main source of water for Agartala city and is also said as the life-line for Agartala, however, days are not far when the city will face severe crisis of water if the pollution continues at this large level.

Despite CM’s several plea to the dwellers along the river to curb the pollution of the river water the pollution still continues in the river. Dumping of human excreta and solid waste has immensely resulted to the pollution of the river water. Continuous cleaning of clothes, washing of utensils and bathing of the cattle is the major source of the pollution.

There are no major industries in the city, main causes of pollution of water bodies including Howrah River is the contamination of human waste (septage) with the water bodies, resulting contamination of the water.

Howrah which is the life-line of water service for Agartala is being polluted every minute due to both domestic sewage and other pollutants that are being dumped in to the river untreated.
