Voice raised to begin the construction work of English medium college at old jail soon, deputation placed to Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty

AGARTALA, April 23 (TIWN): Demanding to begin the construction work of the English medium college at old jail, SFI on Saturday placed mass deputation to education minister Tapan Chakraborty infront of town hall.

The proposed Agartala English medium college to come up soon here at the old central jail with the state government and its concerned department is all set to begin the construction work. However, the central jail was earlier shifted to Bishalgarh from Agartala Dhaleshwar area which has now remained deserted.

A setup of an English medium College in the grounds of the old central jail is also planned in the cards by the state government. The old Central Jail is chosen as the premises for the science college as the new Central jail was constructed at Bishalgarh, which is roughly 16 km from the old jail.

Accepting the deputation he further said that, he is overwhelmed that the school student has shown interest for the establishment of the College in the state and assured that the work will begin soon.

Speaking at the program, Minister Tapan Chakraborty laying importance on English, said, “Without extending English learning, it is not possible for state to set any position in national level.”

Therefore, the state government has decided to establish some English medium schools across the state and an English Medium College in the place of old Central Jail as well. The construction work for this college would be started soon and the state government is aimed to open the college within next two-three years, said Chakraborty.

However, it is to be mentioned here that currently the state does not have its own English medium college for the students of the state due to which most of the students from English medium background has to run abroad to attain higher studies. The Tripura Left front government is now planning to have its own English medium college in an aim to create an opportunities for the local students who are especially from English background.

Terming mother tongue as sole media of education, Chakraborty stated that the state government would take different initiatives to develop it but study in English medium school adds extra significance in course of higher education.

“To adjust in working atmosphere in national level, foreign countries and to brighten the nation’s praise, the students should learn English with due importance”, he added.

Currently the state Tripura has only one English medium college situated at Lembuchera which is being run by the Holy Cross authority. The Tripura Left front government is now planning to have its own English medium college in an aim to create an opportunities for the local students who are especially from English background.
