World-Water-Day: Tripura Govt.’s ‘Clean Howrah’ movement yet to work out after 1 year

AGARTALA, March 22 (TIWN) : It was almost before 1 year that including Tripura Chief Minister himself people come on the road and raised slogans for “Save Howrah and Keep Howrah Clean”. But after the attempt was taken in 2015, almost a year has been moved, the condition of Howrah is becoming more unhygienic day by day.

However, it was after the Modi Govt. had taken initiative to clean Ganga movement that the left front govt was also motivated to take step. No doubt the step was praiseworthy, but in reality, the Govt. is so far from the actualization of the Save Howrah project.

It is to be mentioned that on the occasion of 66th “Sate level Vonomohotsaba” with the initiatives of Youth Affairs and Sports Dept., a big rally had been organized at Jirania Sub-division on June 28, 2015. The programme was inaugurated by Pabitra Kar, Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly and while delivering the speech Kar said, “The matter should not be end here with this rally, but people should come forward to save Howrah.”

But till day, no progress has been done over the project.  Since many decades Howrah has become the place for releasing all garbage, as a result of which its present shape is horrible and its water is not worthy to be used, and the scenario is unchanged yet.

In 2004, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) had conducted a study and observed that more than 1,000 toilets along the Howrah discharged human excreta into the river. The bacterial contamination ranged up to 1,800 most probable numbers per 100 ml, against the standard limit of 500. A part of the project amount, Rs 78.22 crore, was sanctioned by the Centre on January 16, 2009.

Either in the matter of afforestation or developing toilets for the people who are living on the bank of Howrah, the AMC is unconcerned yet now.
