Every promise lost its way in ether: Bereaved family continued to struggle in deplorable condition

KAMALPUR, March 12 (TIWN): A popular proverb demands that, when Rome was caught by fire than Nero was playing on his flute. Likewise, when deceased Bijoy’s family continued to pass days in utter plight, then the political leadership including the thundering Sunil Deodhar as well as the top brass of the state Home department remained busy in their so-called duties and amusements. In fact, who bothered if an intoxicate youth died inside the police lock-up leaving a distressed family behind. And more importantly, as the family had no important connection, no power to influence or dominate a locality and had no affluence, then what would be the profit for struggling for them. And the top brass of Police easily and happily passed the matter as they often claimed themselves of ‘salaried ruffians’.

On 5th June 2015, Kamalpur police booked an excessively intoxicated youth namely Bijoy Deb (35) from the town adjacent village Noagaon and after medical checkup put him behind the bars at the police station.

Then around 3am in that very night his parents and family members got informed that, his physical condition turned serious and he got shifted to BSM Hospital. They rushed to the hospital and found Bijoy dead.

The family members alleged the police with custodial death.  On the next morning, Congress took the issue at the instant and started protest and agitation in front of the police station. PCC President Birajit Sinha rushed to the spot. DIG (Northern Range) Khatrajoy Reang and SP rushed to the police station. Congress demanded exemplary decision against the guilty policemen.

The party also demanded compensation for the family and the arrangement for education and bringing up of three sons of Bijoy. The top cops admitted and assure to meet up the demands. On that very day three cops including ASI Maniklal Mohanta got suspended. But the matter of compensation and the education remained suppressed.

A few days later, BJP national leader Sunil Deodhar approached to Kamalpur regarding the bye-election of Surma Assembly Constituency. He in a press meet at Kamalpur Press Club virtually thundered on the state administration and cops regarding the issue.

He visited the house of the deceased Bijoy and announced to take the matter to the National Human Rights Commission.

Now, almost after a year of all those hurly-burly and promises the family got nothing but a big zero. They had to struggle hard to earn a meager meal. Other aspects of life like education, health, culture etc remained to them as mere words.

The politicians might forget their promises as it became their habit. And more importantly they not belonged to the people-friendly (!) socialist political party which continued to rule our state.

But, why police, which passed decades under that rule, could not change its autocratic torturing habit and turned humane, remained the question of the time. The struggling family now could think nothing good about the administration and its police, but to heave sigh of hopelessness and irreparable loss.
